History repeats itself...

In 1995, I was a freshman in high school. My grades in World History weren't that good to start the school year. The Red Sox were charging towards an AL East crown, and studying the past was the last thing on my young, naive mind. When my father came home furious after parent-teacher conferences, I asked him why I needed to learn about what was done and over with anyways. His response: "It's important for us to learn from and not repeat the mistakes we've made in the past. You've heard that history repeats itself; studying the past allows you to be prepared for the future."

Flash forward 12 years to July 31, 2007. In the middle of summer, the headlines usually devoted to the Red Sox featured something other than baseball. Boston and Minnesota had pulled off a blockbuster trade, with the Celtics trading away what was considered their future to the Timberwolves for Kevin Garnett. Garnett at the time was widely considered the best player available for trade, and just days before was rumored to being going to the Celtics' biggest rival, the Lakers.

One more quick jump to today. Boston and Minnesota once again have the opportunity to send the best player available to the Hub for a group of talented youth. Should this deal go down and Santana be snatched out of the grip of the Evil Empire, there's no doubt that the immediate response, as it was in August for the Celtics, will be that the Sox are front-runners to win the championship next season. So far, the Celtics have lived up to their end of their bargain. Book your World Series tickets now.
