My Game!
August 11, 2008
Okay folks, here you go. It’s been quite sometime since I threw one of these out there. But after witnessing the game I did, I just had to share it with all of you.
The wife and I went to Chicago for the weekend. Initially, the purpose was just for our anniversary. Once we looked at the schedule (back in Feb.), we knew that we could have the best of both worlds. Could it really happen? The Boys are actually gonna be there the same time we will??? Once it was made clear to us what we were supposed to do, all we had left was to wait until the day tix went on sale. I had a friend at work who was originally from Chicago, he told me the day Chi-Sox tix went on sale. I logged on and was not finding much available. But, you know what they say, even the sun shines on a dog’s ass every now and then. I got them! 2 seats in Sec. 512 Row 20. Seat Nos. 21 & 22. whitesox.com told me to click on the ‘Buy Now’ tab. I sure as hell did! These bad boys were ours!!! Now came the wait. No biggie, it’s only 6 months away! How to spend the time? Plan the rest of our weekend. One without the kidlets and just for ourselves. We would plan on the Sears Tower, the lakefront, Navy Pier, whatever else came to our minds.
Finally, Spring Training rolled around. Then I found my ‘Sox Family’ (you know who you are). Then the season started. By the gift of technology I was able to listen to Joe C and get my fix. By the brilliance of CityOfChampions, I was able to share it all with you folks. Time seemed to fly by. Before I knew it the weekend was upon us.
We shipped the kidlets out, 2 to Grandma’s and, 2 to their Aunt and Uncle. We were off. We arrived in Chi. Sat. morning. Got settled and hopped on a train. The wife was excited. Frist train ride for her. We go downtown and started hoofing it to the Sears Tower. 18mph is the speed of the elevators. Once up there we strolled the observation deck and I pulled a Ferris Bueller. I leand forward and thumped my forehead against the glass. They are right. People look like ants. Outside the windows we saw snowflakes. SNOWFLAKES!?! In August?? Well, from that high up I guess anything is possible. I looked to the south and found Comiskey. Then my heart sank, a rain cloud was headed straight for it! ‘This game better not get rained out!’, I said to no one in particular. *SIDENOTE* You would not believe the amount of Sox Faithful we encountered on our little sightseeing expedition! The presence of the Nation was a wonderful thing to behold.
We returned to solid ground and made our way to the Red Line and, eventually, the ballpark. As we hit street level, the rains came. We rushed to find some cover. Ironically, this was the day the Chi-Sox scheduled to be ‘Beach Bash at the Ballpark’. Everyone got beach towels! At least we could use them to dry off our seats. Heaven knows I wasn’t gonna use it for anything else! Turns out the only thing that was cancelled was BoSox BP. DAMMIT! I wanted to snag a few balls and get them signed. Well, the rains passed and the park started to fill.
We found our seats, one row from the top and paralell with the right field foul pole. I caught Dice-K taking a long toss and saw Clay throwing in the Pen. Tek made his way out to help Dice get ready and the Faithful made him know we were here. As we made our way back up to the nose bleeds I noticed a beutiful sight, there were more of us than there were of them. This was gonna be great!
Holy Sh*&t! Contreras blows out his achilles trying to make a play at first. 2 innings into the game and things are already going our way. Boom Boom Bay has his swing looking real good. I tell the wife that he might hit one out. Papi is looking a little rough but that is no reason to be alarmed. It’s early. Then O-Cab singles and brings in Swisher. Down 0-1. Not to fret, folks. In the 6th we get it back when Boom Boom reaches on a fielders choice and Papi chugs his way across the dish. Tie game 1-1.
Then the flodd gates open. Ells singles, Capt. Fenway singles, J.D. draws a walk. Dusty Peds singles and brings in Ells. Enter the Large Father! The FAITHFUL let him know we’re behind him. ‘CRACK’ There it goes! We all rise, we all whoop… DOUBLE!!! (2 more feet and we’re talking about a Granny here folks) Put a crooked number on the board for the Good Guys!
In the 8th Ells gets a hold of one and we all go nuts! 6-1 BoSox. Now, at this time, the Chi-Sox fans are show just how hospitable they really are. We start the ‘Let’s Go Red Sox’ chant and they try, quite weakly, to counter. They can’t we outnumber them too greatly. The wife tries to snap a picture and ends up with the El-Birdo in the view.
Finally, after Dice goes 8 (did I just say that Dice went 8?), Timlin comes in. This one made me shake my head. Timlin, he of the knickers, is wearing long pants???? Explanation please. I think The Boys felt sorry for the Windy City Wankers because Timlin serves up a meatball to Thome and eases the depression for the home town fans. Bottom line, BOSTON RED SOX: 6, chicago white sox: 2!!!!! Victory sure is sweet!!!
On the trip back to the Red Line we find congestion. No worries, I start singing Sweet Caroline and those around me join in. Yes indeed, I started a sing-along. I was quite pleased with myself. Then I spot a guy wearing a Jeter t-shirt. He receives his heckles, as he should. Then he tries to get wise and startes repeating the word ‘26’. I shout, at the top of my lungs, ‘YOU CAN TAKE YOUR 26 RINGS AND SHOVE THEM UP YOUR ASS!’ (Michael, was that rude and obnoxious enough for ya?) Then, while on the train ride back downtown, I start another sing-along, this one to the tune of ‘Dirty Water’. The entire train was a-rockin!
All in all, I say it was a very special, enjoyable night!
Until next time,
GO SOX and,
As always,
STAY FAITHFUL!!!!!!!!!!
