1901: George Wilson is purchased from Albany of the New York State League and tops Milwaukee 7-2. Next season he will play under the name of “George Prentiss”.
1905: After miss all of his Scheduled start this month Bill Dineen pitches the 4th no-hitter of the season. Chicago manages only 26 at bats the 2-0 loss, their first loss to Boston in 11 games.
1908: Behind the pitching of Ed Walsh Chicago blanks Boston 3-0. Only four percentage points separate the top three American League teams.
1915: George Sisler of the Browns (Orioles) in his 2nd start this month gets a no-decision as the Red Sox beat St. Louis 8-4.
1917: In a benefit game for sports writer Tim Murnane between the Red Sox and American League All Stars Babe Ruth and Rube Foster combine for a 2-0 shut out. The All Star also squad includes Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker and “Shoeless” Joe Jackson in the outfield. They rose over $14,000 for the family of Murnane who died on February 13th. Also taking part in the fundraising is actress Fanny Brice selling programs, and former heavyweight Champion of the world John L. Sullivan is the third base coach for the Red Sox. Ruth wins the hitting contest with a 402 foot home run, while Shoeless Joe throws the ball a staggering 396 feet.
1919: The great Johnny Peskey is born in Portland, OR.
1923: Owner Bob Quinn announces that Manager Frank Chance will not be back next season.
1941: Ted Williams starts the day with a batting average .401 and refuses Manager Joe Cronin’s suggestion the he sit out today’s game with the A’s to preserve his average. Williams only gets one single and finishes the year with a batting average of .3995.
1942: The 4,293 young Fenway Fanatics got free admission to today game by bringing 29,000 pounds of scrap metal to aid the war effort. They watch as Tex Hughson win his 22nd game of the year tying Mort Cooper for the Major League record. It is also Ted Williams last game before join the Marines; he hit one single to finish the year with a .356 average and wins his second batting title, Pesky finishes in second place. Ted Williams also leads the Majors in Home Runs (36), RBIs (137), runs (141), and (145).
1944: By insisting the Red Sox play in the rain the Browns lose first place when Boston beats them 4-1. This is the Bo Sox first win the past eleven games.
1967: The Indians shut out the Sox 6-0.
