Van Every, who played baseball at University Christian a decade ago, is persistence personified. Wednesday, that doggedness paid off.

The call came at 8 a.m. Ron Johnson, the manager of the Triple A Pawtuckett (R.I.) Red Sox, was on the other end of the line, and these were his words: "Pack your bags, Jon, you're going to the big leagues. You've got two hours. Don't miss your flight."
As if Van Every would miss the flight he has been waiting for - and working toward - ever since he can remember.
"I was in shock; I couldn't believe it, and I sure wasn't going to miss the flight," Van Every said.
