"behind the bag...It gets through Buckner!" (my apologies)
May 12, 2008
IF this phrase makes you cringe, then please read on… I want you to understand why I joined The Nation. How someone living so far south came to love the Boston Red Sox.
1986 World Series. Game 6… 10th inning… 2 Outs…The Red Sox 1 out away…
Then I'm jumping up and down screaming my head off, along with millions of Red Sox fans across the Nation…
The only problem is… I am screaming for the METS. (It pains me now to admit that.)
Funny how being a 13 year old boy playing little league baseball on a randomly selected team can forever alter ones life. You see. I played for the Mets. They were my team. They were in the World Series. I was going crazy.
Well, it makes me sick now to think about this but the Mets came back and defeated the Red Sox in game 7. The Curse Lives ON..
So… my Mets had won the World Series, and I, as a 13 year old boy, loving baseball wanted to soak in as much as possible. I am all over the TV the next few days wanting to watch the replays, but the most amazing thing. The Mets won, but all I was hearing was about the Red Sox, and the "Curse of the Bambino", and the futility and letdown of the Boston Red Sox. I heard someone on television call the fans 'the most hopeless fans ever.'
I wanted to know what all the hype was. I wanted to know what a curse had to do with a baseball team, and why it was more important than the Mets winning the World Series. I started researching, going to the library, listening to and reading as much as much as I could about the Red Sox. I WAS HOOKED.
SO, in 1987 I became a member of the Nation. My apologies to the ones who paid their dues for 50 – 60 years, who had lived their whole lives…waiting. My allegiance has not been as long as yours, but believe me. It runs just as deep…
So the roller coaster begins.
1988 the Red Sox are going back to the playoffs. World Series here we come. But Oakland had something to say about that.
98 and 99- want go there. And it seems futility has set in. I start to believe in curses.
2003 and Aaron "F*&$^ing" Boone -- I still get sick when I hear his name.
But I remember calling a friend and telling him out of shear desperation. "The curse has been broken". That piano was never found, and no amount of prayers and crying had been able to do it in 85 years. But I felt it.
WHY? The Red Sox, in a losing game seven had extended the curse beyond it's limit. They had not lost in 7 games. We were in the second inning of the 8th game. Curse Broken.
Desperation on my part, but it seemed rational and it gave hope (and the exorcism at my home had not worked) .
2004- Down 0-4 to the Yankees. Hell, it figures, after all it’s my Red Sox…
BASEBALL HISTORY.
WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS.
The BOSTON RED SOX!
I, like the rest of the Nation was stunned. Nothing will ever describe the feeling. Want even try.
SO once again I apologize to the Nation. I only waited 20 something years, but victory still never tasted sweeter.
2007 World Series Champions. Once again. Two in four years!!!
Will we repeat? Don’t know….
But one thing I know for damn sure.
THE YANKEES SUCK!!
And I am just glad to be along for the ride. Thank you Red Sox…
