Inside Edge Report Cards
About the Inside Edge Report Cards
The Inside Edge Report Cards are objective reports based on how well hitters and pitchers perform in several key areas compared to the MLB average. The reports are entirely based on pitch-based data, rather than personal opinion.
It is possible for a hitter or pitcher to have a “good game”, yet not receive an A+ grade. In fact, an A+ grade is very rare simply because of the number of categories a player would have to score very high marks in. For example, a pitcher may allow 3 hits over 9 innings. While that pitcher surely pitched well, the report card may reveal that he did not get his off-speed pitches over for strikes and that hitters actually hit his fastball hard, but right at the defense. Those details could cause the pitcher’s grade to be lower than A+.
It is also possible for a player to appear to have an “off-night”, yet receive an ‘A’ or ‘B’ letter grade. For example, a hitter with an 0-for-4 game can indeed receive an ‘A” grade because the report cards look at how well he hit the ball (well-hit average), not just number of hits. So, the report cards reward the hitter for those line-outs and deep fly balls, 7+pitch at-bats and other quality measures that are important aspects of hitting.
Ultimately, the aim of the report cards is to tell the most complete story of what actually took place, rather than simply judging player performance by surface stats such as batting average or runs allowed.
