Lester and Ellsbury aren't trade bait anymore

Entering the season for this year's Red Sox, the names Jon Lester and Jacoby Ellsbury were firmly linked to a bigger name, one that would have almost guaranteed Boston a place in the postseason, and, possibly, brought its third championship in five years. That name: Johan Santana.

After Monday night, though, that link is gone. It already was tenuous, as the two youngsters showed more consistent flashes of potential throughout the early season. Still, a few Red Sox fans had to keep the thought in the back of their minds when watching Lester pitch or Ellsbury hit: "Wouldn't it be nice to have Johan Santana?" But after a 7-0 win over Kansas City on Monday night, that thought has been obliterated.

Lester -- up-and-down throughout the early part of the season, at 2-2 with a 3.95 ERA -- showed just why the Red Sox think so highly of him. He threw a no-hitter, a sparkling performance in which he moved his variety of low-90s fastballs around the lower parts of the strike zone and froze Kansas City's batters by dropping in his looping curve.

	I have to say Im so proud of lester what he has been able to accomplish as a kid who has battle back from adverstiste and threw a no hitter even some of the great pitchers have never thrown a no hitter like roger clemens and others 05/20/2008 6:19 PM
