How deep are the Red Sox offensively? So deep, club officials say they would not need to trade for a hitter even if designated hitter David Ortiz failed to recover adequately from his left-wrist issue.
In fact, one team official says he would be "shocked" if the Sox added a position player before the July 31 non-waiver deadline -- barring further injuries, of course.
The Sox, who host the Cardinals this weekend (Saturday, MLB on FOX, 3:55 p.m. ET), would be far more likely to bid for Indians left-hander C.C. Sabathia or a left-handed reliever than they are to pursue an Adam Dunn or Mark Teixeira, even in the absence of Ortiz.
Think about that: The combination of Ortiz and Manny Ramirez — a major element of the Sox's World Series titles in 2004 and '07 — no longer is considered essential to the team's success.
Helpful, no doubt. But not essential.
