Even keeping him away from other teams doesn't make much sense to me...he's not the player he used to be and has had a sreak of injuries in recent years.I don't see him in Boston and Pawtucket is in a playoff run of their own;maybe there, but IDK...why is the big question here I think. 08/07/2008 11:19 AM |

mikeymomo you are a idiot brian giles is still a good bat he has a 296 ba this year if he gose to the sox they got a grate bench. if we did not claim him the rays would of claim for him and trade for him and if would of ended up in the rays lineup it would make the rays more powerfull 08/07/2008 12:46 PM |

So the idiot will ask you then...where does he play ??? He'll be happy sitting on the bench with his .296 BA,getting MAYBE 4 AB a WEEK ??? Where does he fit into the overall picture here;that's all I'm asking... 08/07/2008 12:50 PM |

Seems like a strange move, understand keeping him away from Rays but he does not fit. Good player but not for Boston. We have 4 outfielders and the infield is stacked, we should consider arms first!!! 08/07/2008 12:54 PM |

Ummm, a bizarre deal in my opinion as well. I would have let the Rays take him if they wanted. And stop being an "idiot" mikey, and see that this .296 player is a BLESSING to a very weak outfield! LMAO 08/07/2008 1:12 PM |

Buster Olney of ESPN has this up;maybe this/these are the reasons...'The Boston Red Sox have placed a waiver claim on San Diego right fielder Brian Giles, and are negotiating to acquire the 14-year veteran from the Padres.
Giles, 37, is hitting .296 with a .391 on-base percentage, 61 walks and 44 strikeouts this season.
Boston's interest in Giles might be spurred by concern about the health of third baseman Mike Lowell, who is battling a sore hip, and designated hitter David Ortiz, who has spent time on the disabled list resting a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist.
Giles is earning $9 million this year, and his contract with the Padres has a club option for $9 million for 2009 that would climb to $11 million in the event he is traded.
Giles has a limited no-trade clause, and Boston is among the teams to which he can be traded without his permission.
Joe Bick, his agent, declined to discuss the situation.'
Buster Olney is a senior writer for ESPN The Magazine. ...View More 08/07/2008 1:30 PM |

Giles would be a good addition. Anytime you can add a guy who has an Average of.300, with an OBP of close to .400, you do it. You keep him from the Rays or Angels. He's a better hitter than Crisp, and he's better than anything they have in Pawtucket for a September call-up when the roster expands. Was it Lou Gorman that said, "What would we do with Willie McGee"? Giles is no McGee, but still a quality player. ...View More 08/07/2008 3:36 PM |

I believe he is a Boston native, which fueled my anger when he so blantantly made it clear that he DIDN'T want to play in Boston. 08/13/2008 8:44 PM |
