Manny FINED - and not Happy about it
JasonS found this 13 days ago on www.boston.com

According to former WBZ sports director Bob Lobel, Manny Ramirez was fined a six-figure amount for his June altercation with Red Sox traveling secretary Jack McCormick -- and he wasn't happy about it.

"Manny was fined six figures to go to a charity," Lobel said this morning on sports radio WEEI. "That got [Manny's] attention ... he became a petulant child by being punished. No matter what the crime was, pushing an employee, that was the issue ... he acted out [after they fined him]. They got his attention. He doesn't like to be punished in any way, shape, or form... If he did take three straight strikes to send a message and that contributed to a loss...GOOD-BYE!!! Last year they needed every win to secure home field advantage, and without that, they probably wouldn't have won the World Series. I wouldn't accept this from kids I coach. The Red Sox should not accept 'Manny Being Manny' looking at three pitches, getting paid $20 million. If you want to pout and make a point...do it in the clubhouse, in the parking lot, in the owner's office...not on the field! ...View More

This is a great post;kudos to JasonS. Bob Lobel has been on the sports scene in New England for over 30 years;most of us remember him as the #1 sports guy at Ch.4 in Boston until recently. He has known/knows anybody & everybody who is a fixture in the Boston sports world in that time. I would be inclined to believe Bob here;why would he start some crap just for the sake of starting crap? That was never the way he operated here before...why start now? That being said,I'm not surprised to hear of a fine-or any disciplinary action-being given to Manny.I really believe that he knows what he did is wrong,he's sorry that it happened, and knows that he must suffer the consequences of his actions...Manny might live in his own little world at times, but for the most part,he's well aware of his surroundings. I don't know if he'd do what is implied here[in the Skankee game, leaving the bat on his shoulder]...I really can't see him being that vindictive...but,perhaps,we'll never know. I think that this, once again...unfortunately,will be played out in the various media outlets for the next week or so,on the heels of the 'Feud' with John Henry, the principal owner of the Boston Red Sox. Scott Boras,Manny's agent, will no doubt issue a statement on this matter later today...if he already hasn't. Time to start earning your pay,Scott. So where will this lead to as the Red Sox start the 2nd half as prohibitive favorites to not just win the AL East pennant, but thw WS to boot??? We will see... ...View More

I've been listening to it on WEEI, still am. Very disturbing. Bob is a very credible source. I have to give Manny the benefit of the doubt on the 3 pitches. Don't like the alternative, because if he did do that, I want him out next year too. No room for on the field selfishness. ~TEAM-RLF~ Staying or going, Manny needs a great second half too and has to be motivated. Boras only gets paid if Manny leaves, so look for him trying to sail the Manny ship that way. Who knows, nothing would surprise me as to whether he stays or goes. I for one, would miss him. Let's just collect some more rings and sort this out at the end of season. We win a World series and Manny is instrumental, he'll be here at leat one more year for sure, it's the Sox call not his, and any antics next year make his value go down when he signs a new deal eventually, so he should be good Manny we know and love! I'm not worrying past tonight's game! Wish the media would overlook some things! Do we really need to know all the behind the scenes stuff? shame on me for listening! DELETE DELETE! Play Ball! ...View More

It's more like Boston being Boston. We've got a superstar who's well liked by the fans in a contract year, so what does the media do--run their name into the ground. It sounds very paranoid to think that Manny took those three pitches to get back at management. Manny's from NY I highly doubt he'd do anything to intentionally make himself look bad in front of his friends and family. It's not like we've never seen Manny take three pitches before. ...View More

Wow this is very disturbing! I am reading here that Bob Lobel is a very credible source. I am not of the Boston area so I really have no way of knowing one way or the other about him...but I also just read that Bob Lobel also used to accuse Yaz of "dogging it" when he had a bad game. How can anyone know but Manny-very harsh accusations to make with no way of proving it! ...View More

This is BS! Don't be so gullible. Lobel is not a 'credible source', He's an out of work rumour mongerer who tried to pass this garbage off at comcast via Felger. It sank like a stone there and now he's peddling his UNSUBSTANTIATED 'opinion' as fact at WEEI, where Manny bashing is the number one sport. Anyone who SAW the game that nite saw Rivera's huge strike zone get even bigger, courtesy of that ump. Manny got faked out by three cutters - the bat never left his shoulder but his feet and legs were moving in response - he misjudged the location, as he has before and will again. In the middle of a hellacious slump, Manny got taken by his own tendency to wait on 'his pitch', the biggest strike zone any pitcher has ever received, and three craftily located pitches by the best reliever in mlb history. Yet Lobel chooses to make it about a deliberate sabotage of himself and his team by 24. Pathetic. This is libelous nonsense. Lobel is a complete loser who has carried on a vendetta against Manny for years. Don't listen to the old wives tales of an unemployed gossip mongerer. Yeah, get a job, Bob. Your gossiping and character asassination are repulsive. ...View More

Yeah,Lobel used to do it to Yaz;he did it to others as well...being a member of the media gives those that are a so-called license, for lack of a better word,to do this.Remember, they are protected by the 1st Amendment...if they don't go over the line in regards to slandering or libeling, they have every right to do so. Bob Lobel was a responsible journalist;he'd never do it to get a ratings spike,as is done so often today. It also was a different time in sports reporting...the reporters actually had relationships with the various athletes...real,not contrived, made up for the sake of kissing up,relationships.[see Ahmad Rashad/Michael Jordan]They both had to live in the same area...there wasn't the propensity to 'hurt or embarrass' an athlete if he didn't want to talk to you like some of them do today. There was actual trust between the two...a rarity today. And it didn't happen with every reporter,either...it had to be earned, first and foremost. I would but quite a bit of weight into what Bob Lobel said in his radio interview today...he has no reason NOT to tell the truth about this. ...View More

Being in Denver I did not get a chance to hear Lobel's Comments. If it is true the Manny did intentional sit on all three pitches in a game that could go a long way into determining the AL East that is very wrong. Let us not forget at one point Manny said he would LOVE to play for the Yankees. With Manny you never now if he is just being Manny, or something else is going on. I would hope that he simply waiting for his pitch, after all he is the greatest 2 stike hitters in the history of baseball. If I had to go with my gut on this I think he was sending a message, it is the only thing that in my mind can explain it. ...View More

im not buying the three strikes.. Manny would never do that to his team! if he wants to send a mesage to the suits he would come up with something else!

I certainly hope he didn't strike out on purpose. That would be a disgrace. It did seem strange that he didn't even try to swing though.

This just in...(via "Extra Bases" Boston Globe) Manny Ramirez was disciplined by the Red Sox in the aftermath of his June 28 altercation in Houston with Red Sox traveling secretary Jack McCormick in an agreement struck among the club, the player and his agent, Scott Boras, and the players' union. According to industry sources, Ramirez, in addition to apologizing to McCormick, paid a fine of between $10,000 to $15,000, with the money going to an agreed-upon charity. Reports that Ramirez had been assessed a six-figure fine are not true, and Red Sox officials have not raised the issue that Ramirez's strikeout against Mariano Rivera in a pinch-hit appearance July 6 was in any way related to the discipline administered. Also, while Ramirez expressed some frustration this week about his contract status, all parties involved have recognized that the Sox do not intend to address the issue of his 2009 and 2010 option years until after the season. The Sox hold $20 million options on Ramirez for each season. ...View More

AAAH baseball was sooo much simpler before big money entered the picture. Its all that SOB Steinbrenner's fault! I like to think of it as B.S.- Before Steinbrenner. lol

'Credibilty' has nothing to do with and does NOT give you an edge on getting into someone elses head! This guy is a pompous jerk for even suggesting this! he is obviously concerned with his own stature, rather than that of the players. Why else would he make a a character assasination which cann't be proven, once way or another. Seems to me, Bob took advantage of the fact that Boston loves to hate Manny when they think there's a reason. Whats a matter, Bob...don't have enough interesting topics to write about so you had to go plant a seed?? You make me SICK! ...View More
