Pap doesn't back away
sportsgal found this 4 days ago on www.boston.com
Jonathan Papelbon isn't sorry he called Manny Ramírez a "cancer" in an Esquire interview this offseason, nor is he backing away from the comments. "I'm not going to sugarcoat anything," he said yesterday.

And he didn't.

"It takes 25 guys on a team to win, not 24, and that was blatantly obvious," Papelbon said after the Red Sox' workout at City of Palms Park....

is it a sign of a great player to be able to turn his talent on when he wants? yes. is it a sign of a great player to do that when you've got an entire group of guys giving 100% & said player is throwing a temper tantrum? i think Pap said it best...no, it's a friggin' malignant tumor!

Pap's is not a very intelligent guy, that much is clear. He should not be using the word cancer. And he throws around the analogy of war and foxholes like he's a real soldier, it's a game you moron! I think Jon Lester wouldn't care to hear these words, and Paps can start pretending he's a soldier when our brothers and sisters come home from the war. Pls stop talking Paps!

At the same time, it takes 25 to lose a game as well. Why does everyone say that you win as a team but lose as individuals? I dont get it. Paps just made himself look that much worse. First complain about your contract at such a young age then you break the sanctity of the clubhouse...come on kid, INTEGRITY! What does talking about this do to better your current club Paps, just curious. You're keeping the cancer alive! ...View More

When Manny hits walk off home runs we win as a team but when we lose its Manny's fault and NOT the rest of the Red Sox right. It doesn't work that way people, you cant have it one way and not the other.

I never blamed Manny for a loss, it means the other 8 guys on the field didn't get it done either. although some of his antics just before his dismissal most certainly contributed to losses. How about the 1-0 Yankee game he didn't play because "his knee hurt" and then he forgot which one to limp on. Had he played in this pennant race game, he could have been a hero and perhaps won that game for us. Pap makes the difference between wins and losses, and if he gives up a homer in the bottom of the 9th, it's on him and he knows it. Papelbon has the potential to be one of the best closers in the game and I am glad we have him. If he occassionaly spouts off on something, I can live with that. Manny leaving and under the circumstances that he left are still bothersome and the interviewer knew that and probably knew they would get a good reaction from Pap. Any good interviewer will know who they are dealing with prior to meeting and try to capitalize on that. That story is now one of the most talked about things on TV and radio right now, so they were successful. Perhaps Pap was drwn into that statement, but ultimately had the choice to comment or say "I'd rather not discuss it". The writer knew he wouldn't take the high road. ...View More

Well, it doesn't really matter at this point. Like Tito said, "It doesn't make sense to talk about stuff like that. We did what we thought was the right thing for our team [in trading Ramírez] and we'll continue to do that." He should've kept opinions like this in the clubhouse. Integrity, Paps.
