'Helmet flips become ritual of the game'
SawxFawx found this 3 months ago on sports.yahoo.com
A straight shot to Papi and the Manny of old...

It's an interesting take on a "ritual" but perhaps Sox fans would interpret as a straight shot to our "orgullo"...which means 'pride' in Spanish. The article sites the likes of monster sluggers David Ortiz, Tigers Miguel Cabrera, Reds Jay Bruce, and White Sox Carlos Quentin as all being guilty perpetrators of MLB's 'end-zone dance.'

Phillies slugger Ryan Howard jokes that if you DON'T take your helmet off after a walk-off homer, it "eases cerebral damage" done by your teammates during the overzealous celebration.

Is this exactly what the doctor ordered? Could this be the rhyme & reason to every slump or failed catch Manny Ramirez ever endured during his long tenure in Boston? Could it explain his rather quirky personality and disappearing acts into the dungeons of Fenway's left field wall? Or was it back to his Utopian palace at the Ritz residences in Battery Park? ...Hey Tito, where was the antidote to this dilemma when we really needed it?

I'm obviously being very facetious.

I remember reading about this in 2004;I believe it was a quote from Kevin Millar in regards to the helmet flipping...yes,the guys were getting whacked around pretty good on top of the helmets, thus the 'flipping it off' rage began. As of late,I've noticed the new thing appears to be sliding into home plate on a game-winning HR to avoid the masses...A

But even that is silly...why would they risk sliding into home plate during a celebration when you have 50 cleats with metal spikes just waiting to rake your legs and ankles? Not to mention they are jumping around...with the masses

BOHICA....
Scott Van Pelt was talking about this today on his radio show. He was asking Nick Swisher (who hit a walk-off for the ChiSox last night) where the hat flipping tradition began. The first memory I have of it is with the Red Sox. Obviously, I watch more Red Sox baseball and would be more likely to remember a Boston walk-off than any other. Anybody know who did it first?
