About Me
I am a 21-year-old crazy Red Sox fan. No, I'm not that girl Sox poser who disgraces the team & fans by wearing ridiculous pink Sox hats, pink Sox shirts, and mistakes Manny for Pedro… I get overly pissed at poser fans, overly turned off by people who don't like baseball, and overly passionate over just a game in June. We all know it's never just a game...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am not your typical diehard Sox fan for two reasons… First, I am not a Sox encyclopedia. Meaning, I’m not that guy who is explaining the life history of Fenway Park, Ted Willaims, or the starting line up in 1995. Everything I know about the game, the players, and the history, I have taught myself from watching every game for the past 4 years. I don’t have a sox fan base of friends either, so for these past few years I’ve probably watched 75% of the games by myself. Game 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 of the 04 ALCS I watched alone in my room…. Pacing around, swearing, throwing shhit, and yelling by yourself, in your room, is pretty freaking pathetic. But that’s me. I’d rather watch games by myself than watch with a group of people who are either a) pretending to be interested in the game, or b) couldn’t give a shhit what happens, but still watch to fit in. F*&k that. I don’t know all the history, all the stats, and everything to do with the Sox. But that’s why I’m here.. I’m here to meet people who will teach me so much more about the game, the team, calls, plays, pitches, etc.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Second, how I became a Sox fan is different from probably 90% of all you diehards out there. I did not grow up in a sports family. None of my friends got me into the Sox, no one in my family did either. I never played soft ball or baseball... so I started from complete scratch with no knowledge of the game or the team. No teachers or comrads to watch with either. When I started going though some really, really hard times when I was younger, I lost a lot. I lost family, friends, and myself… I literally was numb to the entire world. Then one day in 2002, I don’t remember what day or what game, because that time period is still very fuzzy to me, but I was flipping through the channels and I came on a Sox game. The first thing I noticed was all the green.. how vibrant and green everything was. Then the sounds, the cheers, the crowd, the players, the game, and how it all worked out like clockwork. It was beautiful. I watched the whole game, we won, and it was love at first site. I didn’t just fall in love with the team, but the game of baseball itself. And ever since that day, I have grown an attachment unlike no other. I grew up a total tomboy, so I always loved sports and playing them, but I felt almost jipped after I became a fan. Why the fuuck didn’t anyone show me this years ago??!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The attachment I grew for this team is stronger than attachments I have for some people I know. See when I lost my family and had no friends there was only one thing that could make me smile, make me laugh, make me feel passionate, make me feel normal… it was the only thing that made me feel anything but numb and alone. It was a complete natural high, and I didn’t know where it came from but it all hit me like a ton of bricks and ever since then I’ve been that girl who can’t miss a game cause she thinks she’s gonna screw up the team’s winning streak.. I’m that girl who cringes and gets goose bumps every freaking time she hears Aaron Boone’s homerun, or the Buckner play.. I’m that girl who lost her bank account cause she went in the negative blowing money on Sox-Yanke tickets..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Long story short, when I was going through the hardest times of my life, the Sox fukking saved me. The team saved me. So now, now that I am in the clear and have been for years, now that life is awesome and I’m on track with everything, my love for the Sox has only grown since that first game I ever watched. It grows every season and every game. And I can not imagine a life with out the Sox, because it’s a part of my identity now. Wow, I rambled a lot.. can't help it.. I can’t explain my love for the Sox any other way.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As far as our Pats.. I love all sports, I love playing them, watching them and learning about them. But it's hard for me to follow any other team because I know that I could never love any other team like I love the Sox, so I feel like I'd be a poser fan, and I HATE poser sports fans. So, until I meet someone who can teach me the game of football (Pats) and basketball (celtics) and hockey (bruins) I AM living that quote from Fever Pitch: "You know there are other sports than baseball..."
"I would debate you, but that would only lead to me being dragged out in handcuffs."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ohh… I’ve had an obsession with Jason Varitek for years, but most recently Mike Lowell is my current affair. I want to marry him and have his babies. Annnd Varitek will come on the weekends. Papelbon every friday. But Lowell, he's the sexiest man in the game of baseball. Period.
