My thoughts are with JD!
September 13, 2008
First and foremost, I must mention my condolences to JD and his family on the loss of his Grandmother. It is never easy to lose a beloved family member. My prayers are with his family....
Now, that I have said that, let me get to the point. JD has had a fantastic season! When he was HOT in June, he made this team on fire, along with some of his other teammates, and helped us get to where we are today. Just 2 games out of first, and in a pretty good spot for the wild card. But, sadly, he is now injured, and I don't think many people understand what it is he is going through. I do.
A herniated disk in a back is a terribly painful ordeal. I can tell you all first hand because just had back surgery in May for my herniated disks. Cotozone shots and epiderals will not eliviate the pain, or stop the nerve damage from occurring. If JD's disk problems were anything like mine, he had his good days and his bad, and more bad than good. It is extremely painful to sit, to stand for long periods of time, and to twist. Unfortunatley, these are all part of his job. Weather also plays an part...rain always made my disk swell and press more on the nerves. So, I tell you, it is a day to day situation, and not one he should rush.
If JD rushes his way to the field, he could cause more perminant damage to his nerves. This could affect his legs, toes, and back. We love JD and don't want to see him do more damamge. So, what is the GOOD NEWS HERE? If his problem is anything like mine, which it sounds like through the media reports, it is not difficult to fix!
My surgery required 1 night in the hospital and 2 weeks recovery before I got back to most of my normal activities. Now, let me be honest here. I am not an athletic person. Love sports, just don't play them. But, after just 2 weeks I was back to work, and at physical therapy. I had gotten the ok to go back to the gym and start light. It is now 4 months later, and I have no pain and full use of my back (which is how I felt just 1 month later!)
JD is in much better shape than I am, and am sure that the recovery for him would go just as smooth. He would probably be out for the rest of the season if he had it now, but would definitely be back full force for Spring Training. Other possibility, you get through it for the next month and a half, play when you can, and have the surgery at the end of October.
I guess what I am saying is that the pain JD feels sucks and he should have the surgery at some point, sooner than later. I wish I hadn't waited 3 years!
