When Did the Red Sox Become the Bad Guys?
October 13, 2008
If you are a baseball historian then you can remember the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankee rivalry. Each World Series they were in, the Yankees would come out on top; except for one year when Brooklyn finally overcame the odds and won it all. The Yankees were the bad guys and Brooklyn was the lovable loser type to finally overcome all odds.
In today's generation the Angels represent Brooklyn and dare I say it, the Red Sox represent the Yankees. (washing mouth out with soap as I speak). We are the guys that always beat the Angels in the Divisional series. We are the guys that win, win, win and are now the only team left in the playoffs with recent post season experience and World Series victories.
So whether I am listening to the radio, television or reading the paper it has become quite apparent that the Boston Red Sox are considered the bad guys by most of baseball. I hear elated cheers by the announcers as the opposing team comes through with a hit or run. No longer is Boston considered to be the team that is in it to win it, instead we are the guys that need to be knocked off our pedestal.
Well all I have to say to that is...IT'S ABOUT TIME! Of course our journey into the hated nation began in 2004 but, the Red Sox really secured that position when we won the Series again in 2007. So now most sports broadcasters seem to project a desire for the underdog teams to beat us.
Yup, the Rays are the underdog team. They neither have experience or longevity to beat the Red Sox in seven games. Even though we were the wild card team we still had and have the edge. Remember when Schilling started out so poorly due to his injury in 2004 and yet he bounced back to win. I believe Josh Beckett (if needed) will have the same recovery. When the game really is on the line, he will come through as will our other players who have had trouble getting on track.
Think about it! Ortiz has not hit a home run yet and here we are in the ALCS. Ellsbury has been hitless for awhile and here we are in the ALCS. We are going to Fenway today for two where our fans will cheer on our team like no other. Some say that Lester and Garza are about equal. Ha! Lester is amazing while Garza will simply be amazed. So let's hear it for the new "bad guys" of baseball. Let's hear it for Boston! Let's hear it for another win to overcome that one loss in Tampa and let really make the rest of the World angry by having Boston move on to the World Series once again.
DRAFTAHOLIC!!!
