1903: The pitching match up tonight is a rematch of game two, as Boston’s Bill Dineen faces Pittsburgh’s Sam Leaver. Despite pitching a complete game Leaver was out pitched by Dineen. After losing the three out of the first four games the American’s have battled back to tie the series at three games each.
1912: Game one of the Fall Classic takes place at the Polo Grounds in New York, New York. In the third inning Josh Devore is walked with one out in the third and is advance by Larry Doyle to third. Fred Snodgrass was struck out, and brings up Red Murray who singled to drive Devore and Doyle home to give the Giants the first lead of the game.
Boston cut the lead to 2-1 in the sixth with a Tris Speaker triple and a RBI ground out by Duffy Lewis. Then in the seventh Harry Hooper hit an RBI double followed by a two run single by Steve Yerkes.
In the home half of the ninth the Giants scored a run to cut the lead 4-3 and the tying run on the base path but Smoky Joe Wood struck out the last two batter to give Boston the win. Boston leads the series 1-0.
1915: Grover Cleveland Alexander lead the Phillies in their first ever World Series appearance to a 3-1 win over the Red Sox. Philadelphia leads the series 1-0.
1967: The ticking alarm clock on The Impossible Dream season is one minute from going off as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Red Sox in Game 4 of the Word Series. In the bottom of the fourth inning Lou Brock provided the spark for four runs to cross the plate. With Hall of Famer Bob Gibson on the mound that is all the Red Birds would need to take a 3 game to 1 series lead.
1986: This time it is the Red Sox turn to run up the score in a 9-2 win over the visiting California Angels. Dwight Evens drove in the winning run in the fifth inning double. Boston got insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
1988: The A’s move one game closer to the American League Championship Series by defeating the Sox 10-6 at home. Mike Greenwell had the lone homer for Boston, while Carney Lansford, Dave Henderson, Mark McGwire, and Ron Hassey homered for the A’s.
2003: Game one of the American League Championship Series saw the Red Sox Tim Wakefield backed by three home runs shut down the pinstripes 5-2 to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
2004: The Sox sweep the Angles out of the playoffs with an 8-6 win. The winning home run was a walk-off 2 run home run from David Ortiz.
