The suspensions are in...

Well, the suspensions for the Red Sox are in and I certainly don't agree with the release. Coco Crisp recieved a deserved 7 games for charging the mound but what I don't understand is the five game (or one start) suspension of Jon Lester. Lester had no hand in the brawl and he didn't throw at anyone. He hit two batters, one in the back on a curveball (clearly not intentional) and another he hit in the foot with a changeup (once again not intentional). Makes no sense and I don't agree with it. The third and final suspension issued to the Red Sox was to Sean Casey who will recieve three games. One can only assume it was because he was the first Red Sox out of the dugout and was pulling guys off but a very leniant three games issued to Casey.

My predictions:

Gomes: 7 games
Crawford: 5 games
Shields: 5 games
Iwamura: 3 games (I'd give you 5 if you didn't hit like a girl)
Navarro won't get any games, if anything the only thing he should get is a Thank You card from Coco Crisp's family for protecting him.

I wasn't too far off with my predictions but I was a whole player off:

James Shields: 6 games (might as well be five, it's only one start)

Jonny Gomes: 5 games (should have been the same as Coco for those haymakers with blatant intent to cause injury)

Edwin Jackson: 5 games (don't know what you did but it must have been bad if you got the same as free swingin' Gomes over there)

Carl Crawford: 4 games (I would have went for five on him but that's just me, we'll compensate the extra game with a fastball in the letters)

Akinori Iwamura: 3 games (hit the gym pal and maybe next time you can get a 5 game suspension like the big boys)

Enjoy the game tonight guys!

This is your "coming out of your shell" I think. Normally your blogs are just the facts but you can't really get a feel for the fan in you. This fight really brought out the "fan" in your blogging, I love it!

Gomes will get his "other punishment" in July when these two teams face eachother again. He may of got 5 games today but he will be sitting out with a baseball lodged inside his eye socket for a few months after Beckett throws a 96mph fastball at him.

Dude the one person I hate right now is Joe Maddon. .. what a lil btch he is. He said we started it and we should have more guys suspended. . . first off crisp said it was over on Wed night after he took his hard slide. We all knew that wasn't the case when you see the whole rays team on the top step when crisp comes up to bat. Gomes has become a no talent pussy who in both brawls he has been in he blind sides someone. When he did it against the skanks, which I do appreciate, he wasn't even in the dugout they had him sitting in the bullpen. He should have received the harshest punishment. oh well what is done is done had to vent though. . . Oh and lester did through at someone I forgot who, but it was after the warning which is why he got it. I call BS on Casey's for being peace keeper though. Whatever. . . here is espn's piece. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3429782 oh and F Joe Maddon!!!

I think this actually goes back a lot further--back to when Carlos Pena got hit by a pitch in Seattle and got a broken finger as a result and is out of their lineup for at least a month. That was the beginning. Coco's slide was uncalled-for at that point in a game. You have to admit it--if it had been to break up a double play, it would have been the right play, but leaving late on a steal attempt? Not a good decision. But for Madden to say (and we could read his lips on national TV--even from out here in Schenectady) to Iwamora, "Don't worry, we'll take care of it tomorrow," certainly was like watching previews of coming attractions at the movies. There was wrongdoing on both sides, but I'm not sure these suspensions are are justified. If the umpire(s) had thought that Lester was throwing at the batters, he should have been thrown out of the game at that point. It doesn't seem to matter to MLB who was trying to keep peace and who wasn't. I will agree that Dioner Navarro was a peacemaker, as were many on the Red Sox. And as for the suggestion that Beckett throw a 96 mph fastball at Gomes in July--As someone who watched Tony C go down, I don't wish that on ANYONE, for ANY REASON. There is no baseball game in the world that is worth that kind of vengeance. This crap needs to stop. We have kids watching these games, and if they think that this is the way to solve problems, that's the only way they'll try to solve their own problems. Okay, okay, I know, it's baseball and these things happen. However, intentionally throwing at someone's eye or head with a lethal weapon--a Beckett fastball or any MLB pitcher's fastball, for that matter--is absolutely unacceptable in my book.
