The Captain To Decline Arbitration

Varitek Reportedly Will Turn Down
Red Sox Offer Of Arbitration
By: Jared Carrabis

This article was originally posted here on SoxSpaceNews.com

A report coming from SI.com has announced that catcher Jason Varitek will decline the Red Sox offer of arbitration to him before tonight’s midnight deadline. Of course this does not make much sense for Varitek to do, which leads me to believe that his agent, Scott Boras, may have had a hand in this decision if it ultimately becomes true. Varitek signed a 4-year, $40 million contract following the 2004 season and was owed $10.4 million in the final year of that contract in 2008.

Varitek is coming off a season in which he hit a career worst, .220, drove in the fewest RBI in a season that he played 100 games or more and posted a career worst OBP with .313. The Sox captain was expected to accept Boston’s arbitration offer and likely would have surpassed his 2008 salary even after the horrendous season he had at the plate. Now that there are reports claiming that he will reject the Red Sox offer of arbitration to him, I am skeptical that another team out there will be willing to exceed his 2008 paycheck of $10.4 million with the market for catchers being so poor.

If, hypothetically, Varitek were to accept the Red Sox arbitration offer, he likely could have received anywhere from $10.5 million to upwards of $12 million through arbitration. Being that Varitek is a Type A free agent, the Red Sox will receive not one, but two compensation draft picks if the catcher signs elsewhere.

For those that don’t understand how arbitration works, just because he has declined arbitration with Boston does not mean that his days in a Red Sox uniform are officially over. If the two sides can work out a deal that both sides are happy with, then Varitek can be brought back on the right terms. However, being that he declined an arbitration offer that likely would have rewarded him over $10 million, there’s a good chance Scott Boras is still seeking “Jorge Posada money” which no team in their right mind will be willing to cough up.

The best case scenario for Red Sox fans that want Varitek back in a Red Sox uniform is this: we have to hope that Varitek does exactly what Alex Rodriguez did when he opted out of his contract with New York. Rodriguez knew when enough was enough from Boras when he took things a little too far. Rodriguez negotiated with the Yankees exclusively without the likes of Boras and came to an agreement that was best for both sides without the super agent whispering into his ear. If the Red Sox captain of four seasons can manage to look past the dollar signs that he deliriously believes are out there for him, then he will return. If not, then we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Thanks Jared, great stuff as always. I think this is going to end badly for Tek and Red Sox. I want him to stay but if not leave on good terms. Both might be impossible now!!!

Good...just what the Sox wanted him to do.

I just hope that boras isnt the reason that tek doesnt stay a red sox.(provided he doesnt).Borass is a cancer to baseball and wish he would get out.

BOHICA....
Jared, it makes all the sense in the world for Varitek to decline arbitration because he's seeking more than one year deal. He wants years, probably four at the least. Hopefully the Red Sox can still sign him.

I guess it depends on how much alimony he has to pay.

fans of sports in this country need to find a way to pickett, petition, etc and rid this asshole of the business. he is a plague upon this nation. democracy and free market be damned. f*&k him

Knarfy, we all know the reason WHY he declined, we all know what he's looking for. But does his reasoning for declining make any sense? No. That was my point. You're coming off of one of the worst seasons in your professional career and you're looking for a raise and a multi-year commitment? He should have accepted the arbitration offer.

I hope Varitek realizes soon the fine line he is walking with that D-bag Boras. I know you pay an agent to do a job, but at some point he has to realize his own best interests may not be addressed. Could be 50/50 that Theo says, ok enough see ya.

33TEK ....
Jared, he may not want a raise, just a lot of years to finish off his career. A team will give him those years at a decent yearly price. Can't blame him on wanting to see what the market bears.

If he really wanted to finish his career in Boston, he could take the one year a time route with the Red Sox like Wakefield has been doing. He just wants the security of knowing that he'll have a home for the next few seasons instead of living one season at a time.

Catchers and pitchers are apples and oranges...Wakefield's case doesn't work for a catcher. Tek probably does want to finish in Boston, but wants to play probably 4 more years guaranteed with a contract.

Thanks! Great write up. I'm still holding out hope to see him behind our plate for next season.

This is win/win for the Sox if Tex returns we all get what we want. If he leaves we get two first round picks.

Tek may end up not coming back but I think this will be a period of adjustment for the Sox...or maybe just for the fans. I hope this ends well.

Not accepting arbitration wasn't a very wise decision on his part. Let's hope we can wheel and deal with him still. If he's looking for a deeper wallet, I don't think that's going to happen.

I hope I am wrong but the Captains time with the sox appears to be winding down , great post jared ty

Why would a player accept arbitration for one year deal when they can probably get a four year deal from some club, especially if that what they're looking for!

If he won't give a hometown discount and accept a 2 year MAX contract, thanks for the memories Tek, but you are asking for waaaay too much money for waaaay too little value to the team (well, to the offense at least).

And though Boras is a jackass...he does right by his clients most of the time. He plays the game very well and brings in the money...and that is what he is paid to do.

Good stuff as always Jared. I agree 100%. Not taking arbitration was not a smart move. Tek is on the downhill slope of his career and you can bet your next paycheck Bor-ass has convinced him he can get him a 4 yr deal somewhere else. This a HUGE gamble on Tek's part and the odds are way against him.

I disagree, negov. There are plenty of teams out there who will give Varitek a 4 year deal. He'll increase ticket sales at a minimum, plus his leadership and experience.
