we love manny
July 13, 2008
I love having Manny Ramirez on the team. He's my favorite player on the Red Sox. A few seasons back I held my breath, crossed my fingers, and rubbed a rabbit's foot that no team would pick up Manny after the Sox put him on irrevocable waivers. There's never a time when I'm not confident that Manny can be a difference maker in any game at any point, even when mired in a month-long slump.
But what Manny did to Jack McCormick is not okay with me and shouldn't be okay with anyone. This weekend in Houston, he asked the Red Sox Traveling Secretary to provide him with 16 tickets for Saturday's sold-out game. When McCormick expressed that it was a tall order, the two had words, which, according to led to Manny pushing McCormick to the ground.
Sounds like the incident from last week--also in Houston--but without the grabbing by the neck. Now while I admit I chuckled at I see no humor in physically assaulting a man considerably older than a conditioned athlete in the prime of his life.
It appears that Manny and McCormick settled their dispute behind closed doors. Maybe Manny bought him a new house or a Hummer or at least a swell barbecue grill like the one he was auctioning on eBay last year.
All I know is that today I have less respect for Manny than I did yesterday.
