A RED SOX FAN SAID TO A YANKEES FAN
May 20, 2008

Last night I was riding along on my pallet jack when I got a text message from my girl saying that my boy Lester pitched a no-no.  I was stoked, let me tell you.  I hauled some major tail over to my buddy who is also a Sox fan and told him about it.  Then I made it a point to haul over to the only true Yankees fan I have EVER met and rubbed it in his freaking face!!  Normally, I'm good with handling things like that and don't find it necessary to say such things to somebody, but he had it coming.  When I got to work at 4:00 yesterday afternoon I was talking to him about the upcoming game.  I told him that Jon was born one day after I was and how sweet it would be for him to pitch a no-no after everything that he's been through and to push the Skanks even further back in the standings.  He actually had the balls to say to me that Lester doesn't have the stamina to pitch for that long.  My reply to him was that with the cycle Lester has, he can do anything as long as he utilizes ALL of his pitches at the right time.  Man do I hate Yankees fans.  So then once we were done talking about Lester, I asked him, "So how does it feel to be 6 games back and growing?"  He said, "It's still really early so you need to stop talking about it."  Of course I didn't stop.  I went on and on and on about how not only is their pen in poor condition, but the majority of their starting pitchers are washed up and the only skill their defense has is in thanks to steroids.  I expected him to blow up in my face, but he didn't.  He said, "You know, Jesse?  I'm man enough to admit that I'm disappointed with my team right now.  Not because of their record, but because of the fact they have managed to damage the reputation of a team players like Munson, Joltin' Joe and the Babe built."   I had nothing to say to that because it was at that point that I realized I had just met my first true Yankee fan.   I gave him a respectful nod and continued on with my business.  He shouted after me, "But Lester is NOT capable of pitching a no-hitter."  I ignored him.

Sorry for the tangent.  So now we fast-forward to when I get the text message.  It took me a minute to find him because he was off somewhere else in the factory momentarily.  I finally tracked him down after I dropped a pallet off and shouted loud and proud what my boy Lester had just accomplished.  He said, "And, sir, I eat my words."  I hopped off of my pallet jack and had a pretty long conversation with the guy about Jon Lester and what he's been through health-wise.  I said to him, "If a man has stamina enough to fight off cancer, then he has MORE than enough stamina to pitch a no-hitter.  Not only that, but he's one of many to represent proudly the team that Williams, Doerr, Yaz, Pesky, Rico, Freddy, Jim Ed, Spoke and Lonborg (just to name a few) built."   He said to me, "I have respect for you, Jesse.  I will also admit that the Sox have more heart than just about any team I've ever watched play the game.  They always have."  My point to this story is that something special happened last night.  Not only did my boy pitch a no-no, but a Sox fan and a Yankee fan have discovered that we can have a civilized conversation about baseball without ripping each other's heads off.  I also learned that TRUE Yankees fans do exist.  They are few and far between, but they are out there and they are fun to have conversations with.  I talked with him about baseball for awhile.  I look forward to it again tonight.

On a topic-related note, our boys are setting this season up to go in the record-books EARLY.  I just made this comment on somebody else's blog.  Country pitched his 1,000th K, Lester pitched a no-no, our Captain has caught for almost 5 no-no's, Jacoby almost broke the steal streak record and Manny will hit for over 500 homers this season.  Talk about ramming that curse 6 feet under the Earth!  We have a lot to be proud of.  We have a team full of heart.  We always manage to do that and I am proud of that.

Please feel free to share a story with me.  This team has a way of making me feel great at the end of the day win or lose because I know that whether we won or we lost, we did it while giving it our all.

GO SOX!

He's an old-school type fan. He has respect for the game on all levels. We talked about a lot last night. I have respect for him as a baseball fan, as he does for me. I, too, hope that the friendship withstands the season.

Eh Jesse I am happy for ya that you've found one of those rare Yankee fans. I know one or two of them myself but they are rare. Usually when you try to talk baseball with a typical Yankee fan they go in to "26 World Championships" and what not. The closest relationship I've ever had with a Yankee fan was with the man that would eventually become my step-dad. He was born in 1922 so he actually lived through the golden era of the Yankees. Since we're talking about no-hitters I never knew what a no no was until July 5, 1983 when he told me that the day before he was at the game wherein Dave Raghetti (curse him) pitched the no no against us on Big George's birthday. Alas it was another chip away at my innocence, blah blah blah. I've heard all the 1918 crap first hand and when we won the penant in 2004 his words were "Oh they haven't done anything yet, they'll never win the World Series." "A DH should never qualify for MVP" (Because the Yankees didn't have an MVP caliber player at DH) etc etc. He who laughs last laughs best I guess. Ironically enough he spent more time watching Red Sox games than he did Yankee games over the last couple of years. Wait a minute, now I've gone off on a huge tangent. Oh well, now I'll wrap it up. Anyways said step-dad passed on last October and I wore my Josh Beckett t-shirt under my suit to his funeral. Now I apologize for sending this in to a Religious direction but in order to be in the presense of the beatification of God (get in to Heaven) one has to be perfect. Ergo I belive my step-dad is now a Red Sox fan. Keep the Faith; 14/09 ...View More

Sawxfan, I'm sure a lot of people wondered if whether or not he would do it. What I was getting at there was that he said, "Lester isn't CAPABLE of pitching a no-hitter." That got me fired up because if you put your mind and heart to it, you can accomplish anything. I think he said that just to get me going. No-no's are so special that it's hard to believe it happened until you watch it the second time around, lol. Thank you all for reading. ...View More

BoSox Ho..
Great blog! Sure better than running each other over with cars. I was at the first Roger-Pedro match-up in game one of the 99 ALDS. I was sitting near a couple of Yankee fans who had been rooting for their team (respectfully) and wearing their colors. They were catching hell when Roger got pulled, but they admitted Pedro was awesome and Clemens pitched poorly. They weren't bad guys and everyone left them alone after their admission. But many are dickheads. We were watching the Cleveland Series game 6 at a halloween party and a yankee fan kept bi&*hing we were watching TV and trash talkin the sox. I shut him up when I told him we'd watch the yankees, but we couldn't get the GOF CHANNEL! He left the room pretty quickly after that. It's cool to get along, but we don't take any sh*&t either! RESPECT! ...View More

Good stuff bro! Great even! I may have to rekindle that discussion with my buddy Joey once again. It's been a bit, what with the Yankees being insignificant right now and all (I love being able to say that...). :-) Good stuff brother...I like Jen, dig reading your blogs, for the passion they contain.

Thanks for sharing Jesse! When I walked into work today in Westchester county, NY (everyone already knows I'm Boston proud), the shipping receiver sees me in the hallway and he says "I gotta tell ya girl, that's some awesome stuff that Lester." I smile and nod a bit stunned as he's usually dogging me with some BS line like "It's early yet, we'll catch you like we always do." Then I walk into the department, and the diehard Pettite lover I sit next to says to me, "I might just become a Red Sox fan..." I blink. Then I open my work email and waiting there is a note from another coworker, a Bronx-raised woman. She wrote "I heard they had a no-hitter by that kid who beat cancer. That's pretty amazing." All I can say, I was very happy in Yankee-land today, almost the way I felt after the World Series. :-) ...View More
