No deal for Youkilis
sportsgal found this 2 months ago on www.boston.com

Kevin Youkilis and the Red Sox will not reach a long-term contract agreement this offseason, said Joe Bick, Youkilis's agent. Youkilis and the team have discussed a possible long-term contract this winter, but the sides currently stand too far apart for a deal to be finished before the 2009 season.

“We’ve had some initial conversations” toward a long-term contract, said Joe Bick, Youkilis’s agent. “It doesn’t look promising.”

I guess "our guys" figure that when the time comes, they'll negotiate..who out there will out bid the Sox now that the Yanks have first and third base tied up for long term deals...unless you fear the skanks will try and sign Youk and make an outfielder out of him..

They were trying to get Tex this year now no Youkilis negotiations seems Youk may not be in the long term plans of the Front Office.

It may be that in light of the recent free agent signings and the $ that has been offered for players and spent on players that Youk's agent was asking for something "stratoshere like" in the heat of the moment...the fact that "our guys" and Youk's agent Joe Bick have not consumated some long term deal as of yet means nothing...again..I doubt that the Red Sox are in any way downplaying Youk's importance to the team...but there a those among us who would like to think and fret that this is the beginning of the end to Youk's playing days in Beantown....ridiculous.... ...View More

Not trying to degrate the front office they make some great moves and have turned over the farm system with some excellent drafts but they also sometimes outsmart themselves when it comes to decision making as a whole and let their egos and "rules" like not giving out 10 year contracts and contacts with no trade clauses. Wake up guys and don't even think about letting any hard feeling towards Scott Bor-A$$ get in the way of resigning Varitek either. If he's not behind the plate catching Josh Beckett opening day then Henry, Werner, Lucchino and heo should be booed opening day! ...View More

Yeah - its all about agents jockeying for money, now. And the press distorts every little thing. Big business. And the rookies try to tolerate this caste system - its in every industry - pretty faces earning big money - what was the last thing I remember you doing for me? I don't think Theo is negligent, but it would be reassuring to know he called a team meeting and swore to take care of his people. When was the last time that happened? ...View More

The situation is, MLB expects revenue to be down in the next 2-3 years. Reduced attendance (maybe not at Fenway, but elsewhere), ad revenues down, etc. etc. etc. so it might not be prudent to offer big long-term contracts.....

... they may not want to continue to eat long-term contracts, because the revenues won't offset them....
