Thoughts About Tek
|
|
Earache702 wrote this 1 month ago on |
As we all know, Tek is on the open market, with Scott Boras pulling the strings. There has been much said about what stance the Sox front office should take, concerning their captain. Should he stay, or should he go?
Here are some observations and thoughts on the subject. If I come across as schizophrenic, my apologies. I, too, am struggling for a solution. While my brain says "business is business", my heart says keep Tek in the family.
Is Tek a great catcher?...

Understand Where We Are

The Red Sox backs are up against the wall - there is no "wiggle room". Tim Wakefield takes the mound tonight, in a must-win situation. If they go down 3 games to 1, it could mean the end of a tumultuous season. We have to remember that this is not the 2004 or 2007 version of our beloved team. This is a team with injuries, a team without across-the-board dominance, a team in transition.
And I, for one, am proud of them. You heap this much adversity in one season on a...

This is repulsive!
I have been reading some wonderful blogs over the last few weeks, and have seen several members of the SH family leave some glowing comments about said blogs, and the heartfelt efforts, contained.
Then, as if the tides magically turn, the downvotes start coming in, and the ratings for these great contributions take a nosedive. No comments are left - just the downvotes.
To those sad, little cowards who have nothing better to do than to waste their...

Okay, you want to jump on the bandwagon, and disrespect "The House that Ruth Built", go ahead! Not me!
We're losing a huge piece of baseball history. Many, many great moments have happened at Yankee Stadium, that can never be replaced. If you've ever walked in Monument Park, you'll know what I mean. Before I knew better, my dad took me along with the guys from his work, to see the Yanks play the Tigers, in 1966. I saw Mickey Mantle hit one of his last home runs. I saw Al...

Autograph Day:
It was the Summer of '69. I was twelve. My dad and I had made the hour and a half drive from Connecticut to Fenway, to take in a Sunday afternoon game. We usually arrived at the park at eleven, in order to watch batting practice. But, this would be a special day. The Sox were starting a brand-new promotion, where two of our beloved Red Sox would be signing autographs for one hour before the game. And, I was fourth in line. Who would it be? To whom would I have a...

Ed and I traveled up to Fenway, to see the Sox take on the Texas Rangers. It rained like hell most of the trip, but was clear and sunny when we arrived.
We made our way to Yawkey way, and stood there, to take it all in. Since the "Will Call" window wouldn't open till five, we decided to eat at the Bleacher Bar. After that, we headed down to the NESN broadcast booth, where we met Rem Dawg. He couldn't have been more cordial.
Soon, it was game time. It didn't take...

Who Says You Can't Go Home?

So, I'm heading back east, for the first time in several years, tomorrow. First, four days in enemy territory (NYC), then home to Manchester, Connecticut.
I hear it's changed a lot. A lot of the old haunts may not be there, anymore. Bentley School, where Ed and I used to play ball almost all day, everyday, is being demolished, to make way for a new facility. I hope I get back in time to see it, even a part of it. I want a brick, for my office.
I want to go to Bob's Stores,...

Introducing ED240

In second grade, 1964, at Bentley School, in Manchester, Connecticut, this new kid showed up to Miss Freeman's class. He was introduced to everyone, as "Ed".
Miss Freeman called me to the front of the classroom, and introduced us, and asked me to go down to the basement, to help the new kid pick out a desk, and carry it back. That was the first day.
All through junior high and high school, we were thrown together. We grew up together. There were laughs, tears,...

In the last All-Star Game, in the last season to be played at Yankee Stadium, the cream rose to the top, as one of the seven members of the Boston Red Sox, J.D. Drew, goes 2 for 4 with a game-tying two-run home run, reaches base three times, and is rightfully awarded the All-Star Most Valuable Player Award.
The stands were virtually empty, as the Yankee fans who were present, couldn't stomach the idea that one of our boys won the game for the American League.
I couldn't...

An Open Letter to Bernie Carbo

Dear Mr. Carbo,
I just wanted to thank you for your contribution to the Boston Red Sox. I, and many members of the Red Sox Nation, know that without your game-tying 3-run pinch-hit home run in game 6 of the 1975 World Series, there would be no stage set for Pudge's memorable shot. Unfortunately, your accomplishment seemed to get lost in all the excitement.
You were one of my favorite members of that great team. You never asked questions - you did what was asked of you, and...

Why Not Mikey?

Although I'm extremely pleased by the prospect of having seven Red Sox in uniform for the upcoming All Star Game, I am dismayed by one glaring omission - where is Mike Lowell?
Close to batting .300, 13 homers, and having a Gold Glove season at third. I think he deserves to be there. Conversely, and this may be a matter of need, why Tek, who is having an off-season? I'm not dissing the Captain, but shouldn't Mike be in his place?

"Come Go With Me", released by the Del Vikings in 1957, was the first song my band ever learned, in 1974. It has a sacred place in my heart, but I thought it might need some new lyrics:
"Down, down down, down, down-vote on me,
You sad, sad loser, think you're hurting me,
I'll keep posting, so down-vote on meeee...
Gutless wonder, afraid to take a stand,
You're too spineless, to be a man,
Wasting your time, so keep on...

There will be those who think that this is the corniest blog they've ever read. So be it. I just want my friends to know that there is someone who cares. No, there are many of us who care. Just know that!
This song always has a profound effect on me as, believe it or not, it helped me through some very difficult times....

CINCINNATI -- David Ortiz is making progress as he heals the torn tendon sheath in his left wrist, and the hard cast, running from elbow to hand, could come off his left arm as soon as this week.
"The pain is actually gone, which is good news," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona.
The announcement confirmed what doctors initially suspected: As long as the pain subsides and there are no further complications, Ortiz will be able to return this season and...

I remember going to Fenway Park with my dad. As we lived in Connecticut, it was about 1 1/2 hours to the park, and the anticipation grew as we traveled up the Mass Pike. We would always go fairly early, usually getting there at about 11:00 AM for a day game, so that we could see batting practice and, hopefully, I could get one of the players to look over my way, for a photo, or an autograph, whatever. We used to park on the street, 3 or 4 blocks from Yawkey Way, and walk over. The street...

First, a piece of friendly advice - do not listen to sportstalk radio, while driving down the freeway, if you've got a temper.
Me, I try not to let the detractors bother me. But, here I am, on the 95 freeway, listening to the Dan Patrick Show, on ESPN. He had some bonehead on the show, and they were discussing the best teams in the MLB.
Dan asked his guest who he thought would make it to this year's World Series. Mr. Bonehead's National League choice was the Chicago Cubs....

I hosted a party tonight, at Cashman Field, the home of the Las Vegas 51's, the triple A affiliate of the L.A. Dodgers. My evening started when I showed up in full Red Sox swag - my 2004 World series cap, and my personalized Sox away jersey, with #57 emblazoned on the back - and some smart-ass said "WRONG TEAM!". I replied "Nope! Right team, wrong park!" He shut up.
Anyway, when the pre-game party was winding down, we headed down to our seats - second row, first...
