Understand Where We Are
October 14, 2008
The Red Sox backs are up against the wall - there is no "wiggle room". Tim Wakefield takes the mound tonight, in a must-win situation. If they go down 3 games to 1, it could mean the end of a tumultuous season. We have to remember that this is not the 2004 or 2007 version of our beloved team. This is a team with injuries, a team without across-the-board dominance, a team in transition.
And I, for one, am proud of them. You heap this much adversity in one season on a lesser team (see New York Yankees), and they would crumble like a graham cracker under a fat lady.
The odds of any team to repeat as World Series Champs is approximately 200 to 1. And, the Sox still have a chance! They've done it before - anything is possible. But, let's not dwell upon whether or not the Sox advance to the World Series. Let's remember that they continue to "fight the good fight", and always give it their best.
I will be watching tonight, just like the rest of you, hoping that the classic version of "Wakey" shows up, and dazzles the Rays. But, if it doesn't happen, and destiny proves to be on the Rays' side, and the Sox go down 3 games to 1, I will still be watching, and hoping, and praying, and sweating over every pitch during game five and, hopefully, games six and seven.
The Sox have given us a lot of joy over the last few years. And, if it's just not meant to be, don't place blame, give thanks - to a team that has given us another exciting year.
