HR Derby
July 8, 2008
So a guy I work with was kind enough to invite me to Home Run Derby at Yankee Stadium this coming Monday. It took me about one half of a second to think about it and excitedly, I said yes. Off we go Monday, making the journey from the Philadelphia to the Bronx. The guy I work with is a Yankees fan who has a partial season ticket plan, which is how he was able to land some sweet tickets in the right field bleachers. Don't worry, the guy is tolerable. Plus, I can find a way to put on my Yankee blinders in order to enjoy a pretty unique experience.
I'm not sure what to expect from this event . . . a lot of hype, pop music, and Chris Berman offering quirky nicknames for all the contestants. This should be a fairly easy pill to swallow, given the circumstances.
There are a few details I'm trying to figure out first. What else is going on around the stadium prior to event? New York is a big enough place that a lot of hoopla surrounding home run derby could take place elsewhere. I guess Bon Jovi is singing in Central Park earlier in the day but I can surely find better use of my time. Do I really want to sit in the bleachers for an hour of batting practice? This will be the ideal place and time to get a souvenir and I'm guessing things will be tougher once the crowd fills in for the main event.
So if any of you have been to one of these before, I would appreciate your suggestions in the comments.
And please forgive me Sox Nation - I'll be wearing this Expos hat so that I can be easily spotted if I'm shown on TV. Drop me a comment next Tuesday if you happen to see me fighting for souvenirs in right field!
