We were in St Pete last month for our annual sabbatical, the late season Sox /Rays series. As you all know, the Rays were kickin'.
For those still damp, freshly baptized Rays fans strutting down the ramps of the Trop last month laughing and chanting, "Boston Sux!, Boston Sux!..." We've been coming here for years, where were you "Devoted" then? We thought (and some Bostonians...

of this site and more importantly, this City's sports will prove to the kids, friends and more importantly, ourselves, that the title of Boston Fan is an honor and a calling. Not some fleeting, summer crush .
Since my introduction to the Sox in the late Sixties (and for my elders, furthur back still) and regardless if we were in a deep, dark slump or had a ten game streak going. I'd overheard around...

Congrats RSN, you made it happen!
Remarkably, the St Pete Times front barely mentions the... Ummmm, game. Thought you may enjoy this. Magic number is FIVE!

Nope, not the Gettysburg address, but hopefully may recharge some of those with questionable spirit.
October, 2004:
The wife and I took a much needed, three week vacation to our humble shack by the sea in Cape Canaveral, Fla.
We were excited about the Red Sox and this great team that had been assembled by the progressive, new ownership and were concerned about being far away at this historic turning point in World...

Time for a little tough love... Hey Beantown, turn those frowns upside down. We're supposed to be an inspiration, Home Team advantage -remember? What would Kevin Millar say if he saw this sickening display? Stand and be rowdy.

... Okay after my assault on this town, it's time for something positive.
1922-37 Spring Trng camp of the Boston Braves/Bees. Last visit, we made it a point to visit the hallowed ground of Crescent Lake Park. 1925-61 Spring Trng camp of the Yankees.
Up the road from downtown St Pete a few blocks (walking distance), sits a special parcel of land. Crescent Lake Park is off the beaten path and the neighborhood surrounding the park...

Okay, Time to rant and I know this topic is of little surprise to most Bostonians...
For the past few years, the wife and I would shoot over from Cape Canaveral (where we will die someday), over to St Pete for the Sox series in the Fall.
The parking lot was a blast as it was entirely occupied by Sox fans livin' the High Life! You could count on one hand all the "Devil Rays" fans in attendance. There were vacant seats as far as the eye could see....

Sept 11, 01; I will never forget the generous and compassionate gestures of that Manhattan neighborhhood surrounding E-16 and Ladder-7s quarters. Those folks really helped hold the surviving crew together in those crazy months afterwards. (This House lost six firefighters).
PS; The crew has some terrific items for sale -proceeds benefit the surviving families. I especially like the baseball caps with the mini helmet shields attached! ...

Finn reincarnated?

There are several reasons a player would cover one arm. Protection from sliding (many players have one way to slide), to keep the throwing arm limber and "warm", protection from wild pitches, vanity, etc.
Thought I'd share a gem. Stumbled across this rare, highly valuable card from 1888 California League series (Michael Finn, player/mgr for the SF Pioneers of the California Base Ball League)....

The missus and myself just spent the weekend on Long Wharf . Had the pleasure of visiting this new watering hole for an hour or two. It was a pleasant experience. Met some fans from all over the country -not of Red Sox, but admirers of Fenway .
Great views, okay comfort food, decent prices and warm ambience. Not bad for a spot that for nearly a century, housed toxic/ volatile chemicals...

The mailman delivered a fantastic gift to my mailbox yesterday, from Sawxhead member Carrigansghost.
The item is an amazing, old postcard with the team photo of the Boston Americans ca. 1910.
This board member had three of these items posted on another board. I had enquired as to the origins and he had volunteered what he had known. I'd offered to purchase it, but was told, in so many...

I met Tony C. in March 1982 as a new Paramedic for a North Shore ambulance co. It was a brisk late winter morning, much like today in fact. My partner and I were to transport Tony from MGH to a Rehab facility up north, as he had suffered permanent brain injury as a result of an MI suffered a couple of months prior and required 'round the clock care.
The staff RNs showed us to Tony's private room over looking the Charles. It was...

The Dead Ball Era was the time (1901-1919) before several rule changes were made in MLB that favored the batter.
This short vid captures the essence of that Time and it's hardships.
I Hope the Nation enjoys it as much as I. This guy assembled some classic shots.
*Terrific signage at the 2:32 mark. "PLEASE DO NOT THROW BOTTLES". Posting that is understandable, since pepper-spray and Lexan shields had yet to be introduced.

My first,
A Summer game in '67 against the O's. I was a poor 9yo Dorchester kid living in a triple-decker. Yep, my momma was on welfare :)
We went to a city-funded summer camp at a defunct old church off Dot Ave. Some of you may have gone there yourselves, "The Little House" it was called. Boston provided a...
