Boston Known For Their Last Minute Moves? Why?
July 31, 2008

In the business world when an employee waits until the last minute to get his work done, that individual will eventually be looking for another job. If anything is worth doing well, it is worth the time to get the job done. I am sure you all remember those days in High School when you failed to give yourselves adequate time to study the tested material, what was the end result? Most likely you crammed the information for your short term memory and that wisdom was then forgotten.

With Baseball; with the Boston Red Sox I find myself seeing a bunch of High School minded leaders that often wait until the last minute to make their move. While they wait, the better names find themselves removed from the table of consideration leaving Boston with less options to make a move.

When Boston realized their failing of the past to sign Arod (not sure that was such a bad thing though), they over compensated in their bid to obtain Dice-K. Boston leadership needs to realize that if they are to obtain top talent to help them in their bid for yet another World Series title, they must avoid the pitfalls of waiting until the deadline to make a move. Instead, they must actively be mindful of the talent available and they must be resolute in their decisions to obtain that talent when needed.

Now I understand the idea of Boston not wanting to over spend and I understand the need to bide ones time in order to gage the talent that is being pursued but what I do not understand is why Boston continues to follow the High School tradition of waiting until the last minute!

I ask the Nation today, does waiting until the last minute seem like a viable solution? Would the Red Sox obtain equal value for Manny now rather than if they took action a bit earlier? And what happens if trade talks fall apart before the deadline? Will a disgruntled Manny make the same effort for Boston after he just was quoted as saying, "Boston does not deserve a guy like Manny R?"

Here is another thought! Waiting until the last minute gives power to those with whom we trade. They know that if we do not make a move we most likely will lose Manny outright. They know they can lower their offer and most like still get something done. Other teams can take advantage of this weakness and exploit it.

Dear leaders of Red Sox Nation; please consider putting more time and consideration into these trades B E F O R E the trade deadline comes and goes, you might discover that you will receive better dividends in the long run. And I do know you have succeeded in beating the deadline before but lets not make this our identity.

Thanks for listing

convicte..
I don't think Theo is a procrastinator, I just think he is very thorough and wants to make the best decision for the team. He must weigh long and short term goals and try to balance it out. He is working on improving the team everyday even if we do not know about it!!!

The Poet..
Yes, I agree in part but, the truth of the matter is and as evidence shows, he does wait until the last minute.
