Would Player Loyalty Exist if Salaries Were Lower?
November 16, 2008
With the recent news about Manny's near suspension from Boston, I got angry. The man said he loved Boston and loved our fans. What I think he loved was the attention, the World Series Rings and the Money.
Years ago players would stay with their teams much longer and usually only left when the owners got involved. Each year a fan could expect to see much of the same faces on their team season in and season out. These players rode the A-trains home with the fans. They would work during the off season on the farm or mill or local store and because they worked as hard as the rest of us, both players and fans were on the same plane.
Today however, many players treat fans like dirt. I remember once asking a rookie unknown for his autograph and he refused. They guy never amounted to anything but I was amazed at how his contract swelled his big fat head to the point of seeing fans as pee-ons.
With what Boston was going to do to Manny, it just goes to show you how money is the root of all that is evil in baseball. Johnny D said he loved our team and would never go to the Yankees. We believed him. Manny said he loved the fans. We believed him. When will the players we cheer for stay loyal to our team? Well, we don't have to look to far. Jason V is one of those players and he is the type of guy who understands the idea of KEEPING THE FAITH and staying faithful to team and fandom.
Thank you Jason for not being like Manny and Johnny D. Thank you for your integrity!
