Would Player Loyalty Exist if Salaries Were Lower?
November 16, 2008

With the recent news about Manny's near suspension from Boston, I got angry. The man said he loved Boston and loved our fans. What I think he loved was the attention, the World Series Rings and the Money.

Years ago players would stay with their teams much longer and usually only left when the owners got involved. Each year a fan could expect to see much of the same faces on their team season in and season out. These players rode the A-trains home with the fans. They would work during the off season on the farm or mill or local store and because they worked as hard as the rest of us, both players and fans were on the same plane.

Today however, many players treat fans like dirt. I remember once asking a rookie unknown for his autograph and he refused. They guy never amounted to anything but I was amazed at how his contract swelled his big fat head to the point of seeing fans as pee-ons.

With what Boston was going to do to Manny, it just goes to show you how money is the root of all that is evil in baseball. Johnny D said he loved our team and would never go to the Yankees. We believed him. Manny said he loved the fans. We believed him. When will the players we cheer for stay loyal to our team? Well, we don't have to look to far. Jason V is one of those players and he is the type of guy who understands the idea of KEEPING THE FAITH and staying faithful to team and fandom.

Thank you Jason for not being like Manny and Johnny D. Thank you for your integrity!

DRAFTAHOLIC!!!

33TEK.....
(online now)*
I hope you are right about Varitek. Sometimes these agents put ideas in the players heads that they are bigger than the sport.

What gives you the idea that Jason Varitek is different? Varitek is no different than Johnny Damon, Asante Samuel or any other professional athlete. He didn't go back to Georgia Tech because he wanted to get his degree, it was because the Twins (Rnd 1, pick 21) didn't "show him the money." Plus loyalty is not a one way street. If the organization isn't going to be loyal to the players than why should the players be loyal back? Baseball's a business. It's like any other business out there, it's cut-throat, no room for loyalty. ...View More

Boston S..
Back in the day the players would stay with one team longer for one reason and one reason only--they had no choice. They signed a contract when they were first drafted and were with that team until the team no longer wanted them. Personally I'm glad that's changed. It's nice that the players and the teams have options. At times it gets out of hand, but it's gotta be better then being owned by the team. ...View More

Believe ..
Lower salaries didn't force the loyalty in the old days, it was the evil reserve clause. And in any free market system of employment, salaries generally rise if one's services have a market demand.

... and Jason Varitek will ALSO understand the idea of the free market if someone offers him ~$50 million for four years, and the Red Sox don't counter-offer.

I don't agree because I have seen teams in the 70's keep more and more players even after owners lost their control. Look at Cal Ripken Jr. The guy was class and stayed with his team, same with Tony Gwynn. It can be done folks, when you love the team you play for, the fans who cheer as much as you love the paycheck. It is also difficult for me to feel sorry for today's players who make more than people who really make a difference in the life of others, like nurses, firefighters, teachers, etc. ...View More
