1999: Carmen Puliafito a Boson area ophthalmologist offers free eye surgery to Major League Baseball Umpires during the postseason do to them blowing three calls during the American League Championship Series. Puliafito chairs the Ophthalmology department at TuftsUniversity of Medicine suspects that some of the umpires are “secretly” nearsighted, “That’s the only explanation I have for three horrible calls”, he would exclaim.
2004: Johnny Damon has to homer including a grad Slam, while Derek Lowe pitches a honey of a game, on only two days rest. The Red Sox would beat the rival Yankees in the American League Championship Series 3-0, becoming the first team in Major League Baseball history to over come such a deficit. Only the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 1975 New York Islanders are other professional Sports teams to battle back from 0-3 in a seven game Series. The Red Sox win the game 10-3.
Boston wins the Series 4-3.
2007: Curt Schilling would retire the Indians in the top of the first, and then the Sox would load the bases on infield hits by Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis, plus a full count walk to David Ortiz. Cleveland’s Fausto Carmona would strike out Manny Ramírez and would get Mike Lowell to pop out, but J.D. Drew would hit a grand slam to center filed to give the Hub City a 4-0 lead. Víctor Martínez got the Tribe on the board with a solo homer. The Sox add six more in the third to put the game on ice; the final score is 12-2.
The series is tied 3-3.
