These "freewebs" petitions really don't have any effect. However, there could be a problem -- look at the Celtics, who have retired nearly EVERY veteran's number. I could easily name some other guys, along with Pesky and Tony C, whose numbers should be retired -- Bill Monbouquette, Dom DiMaggio, Dick Radatz, Frank Malzone, Rick Burleson, and the list goes on and on and on. I think if Jim Rice is elected to the HoF next year, his number will immediately be retired -- and then, and only then, should we raise the spectre of Pesky and Tony C receiving the same honor at a point later in the 2009 season.
