I was there 7 years ago today
September 11, 2008
I had gone to get sneakers. I was working at Wal-Mart and my days off were Tuesday and Wednesday every week. So on Tues Sept. 11th my old lady at the time and I jumped on my bike and rode out to New York city so I can get some sneakers and her something shiny. We had done it so many times before that our only worry was getting everything home on my bike. No one likes to park in Manhattan so we parked at her Aunt's house in Brooklyn and took the train in. I remember getting off under WTC 1 and thinking how monstrous this building is. I can see the gold plaques on the wall and I can feel the buzz that is NYC. I bought an insanely expensive pack of Marlboro's at the kiosk and I tried to convince my lady to go to the top floor with me. Like I said, we had been there so many times, yet we never went to the top. She convinced me to put it off until we finished shopping and off we went. 20 minutes later when that first plane hit it didn't dawn on me that I would've been among the 3,000 that died that day if I would've won out and we would've been going up. All I saw was what everyone else saw....a mistake. I kept asking "how could someone fly into a building....is it not big enough?". No one at the time was scared. We, like so many others, actually walked towards the buildings to get a better look. Then that second plane came and the fear hit us. I've never been to war. I've been to prison and some scary stuff unfolded in there, but never in my life have I felt fear as I felt that day. We started walking away but it being so crowded you couldn't get anywhere. She and I stopped at the Church and just waited for it all to settle down. No one thought those buildings would fall........ I don't talk about it much. I never did. Being covered in ash and seeing people jump from a building isn't something anyone wants to think about. The noise that day will always be with me. I still look up when I hear a plane. I'm grateful to be here today and I'm not sad we didn't win in 2001. That City needed that. I know we talka alot about New Yorkers and there obsession with the Yanks. But that day showed me what New York is all about. Their not rude and inconsiderate. their a great people who pulled through when we needed them. GOD BLESS AMERICA
