Bartolo Colon & Cliff Lee
September 13, 2008

With Colon going today and Cliff Lee winning his 22nd, it reminds me of the connection between the two. To me, probably one of the worst trades in the history of the game, in hindsight. Colon went from Cleveland to Montreal, for amongst others, Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips (now of the Reds) & Grady Sizemore.

A Cy Young candidate in Lee, a perennial All-Star in Sizemore, and in my opinion, one of the more talented players in the game. And in Phillips, wth Utley  & Pedroia, a top three hitter among second baseman. Colon did win a Cy Young after the trade, but in 2005 with the Angels.

You can say it's a bad trade as of now. Who would have known that those three players would have turn out so good? The Red Sox have done similar....remember Jeff Bagwell.

You are right to add the in hindsight, because at the time that was one the few mutually beneficial trades out there. All those guys were going to be good for years. Colon is sad because if he took care of his weight he would be a stud (even though I believe he will help the Red Sox down the stretch he should be an ace!!!).....I hope this is not Sabathia's fate. ...View More

Rice HOF..
Same could be said of bagwell though Knarf. At the time the Sox had Boggs, they had Scott Cooper in AAA, who was a top rated prospect. Bagwell was a third baseman and the Sox were not a good enough development system to see the talent and move him to first base. Hindsight is always the key word when trading prospects.

There have been lots of trades like that through out all of the main sports. Anyone remember who the Cowboys ended up getting for Herschel Walker? It happens, nothing you can do about it after the fact. I am sure, at the time, they are all very solid trades...the tings with prospects is you just never know if they are going to pan out.

Teams will give up prospects to win "Now"....sometimes the bigger picture is overlooked.

This stuff will happen, need a crystal ball to know how they'll work out long term. Now we just need to keep Colon away from the fridge!

You never know how a trade will work in the long run, you just go for the proven players. We had Glavine, Bagwell and Schilling before they were great players. It's the nature of the beast...hope for the best but be prepared for the worst.
