Doom and Gloom, or Calling a Spade a Spade?
October 15, 2008
Well, now that our team has hit a rough patch (back to back ass kickings at the hands of the Rays) some people seem to be all sorts of "doom and gloom", or at least that is how it is perceived. There are TWO ways to take what most of you see as people being negative, fairweather, turncoats, etc, etc, etc.
The first, and most common visualization of the recent "down 1-3" comments is that people are getting down on our team, abandoning faith, and turning their backs on this team when they "need us most". I do see the point, I do understand all of the "slogans", Keep the faith, You gotta believe, and the like...but no matter how many shooting stars we wish on, no matter how many pennies we throw into wishing wells, no matter how many magic lamps we rub in hopes of three wishes, all of what we, the fans, do really has a minimal amount of bearing on the outcome of the games. That being said, I , myself, will continue to "keep the faith" and "believe" until the series is over.
The second way to interpret those "gloomy" comments is that these are the people that are seeing the light, the ones that refuse to buy into superstitions that say "slogans" and "belief" can save us from being defeated, the ones who call a spade a spade, the ones who have watched what the Rays have done to us and know the reality of the situation. I have the ability to see both sides clearly. I understand that the series isn't over until the last pitch is thrown and one team is jumping up and down like a bunch of escapees from the insane asylum, BUT I also understand that we will not win this series unless something changes and changes FAST! The Rays have made us their bi&*h over the course of the last two games, and they have done it on OUR TURF, where we traditionally RULE all comers!
So whether you are a fan that will always have a sunny outlook even in the most overcast of times, or you are a fan that, underneath all of the "gloom and doom", has an undying hope in a dire situation, yet calls it as you see it, I applaud you. I applaud your passion, I applaud your positivity and I applaud you for being able to talk about the teams faults and what they need to do to get through this series and the next.
In closing, I guess I would like to offer a piece of advice...if someone talks about how the Rays have outplayed us, how the team has been flat, and how we need to get our sh*&t together if we are going to make another shocking come back, don't take that as them being negative and giving up, and the reverse goes as well .
Whether you are a "doom and gloomer" or a "Its always Sunny in Bostoner", we all know that anything can happen, and in regards to the Sox, anything probably will! Lets go Red Sox!
