Selig has been Impeached, the Dust has Settled
February 10, 2009

Ok, so Selig wasn't (nor do I believe that he can be) "impeached, per se, but what I want to know from all of you knowledgable baseball fans out there is; What would you do to clean up baseball?

The options really are endless...you could take the names of every single person that has tested positive for a PED and strike them completely from the record books, but then, who is to say that THIS is the steroid era and that it hasn't been a problem for generations?  (Humans began experimenting with horse steroids in the early 1900's...so it is a possibility that all of our hero's (Hank Aaron for example) took something to make himself better.

You could grandfather EVERYTHING that has been done, up until the start of the 2009 season...forgive and forget, move on, and start a mandatory testing program...

So what would you do if YOU were the nex commish of Major League Baseball?  There are a lot of people on here that are so pissed off about all of this, but I have heard few options as to how to handle this situation...

One more time!  How would YOU (as a faux commish) handle this scandal that is rocking the MLB world?

I understand the point you are trying to make Kippster but compare hank Aarron who started his career at 6 ft 180 lbs and ended it at 6' 180 pounds or Carl Yastrzemski at 5'11 180 at the beggining and end to mr potato head bonds whos head alone gained ten pounds and three hat sizes or big Mac who went from a skinny whippet to an Offensive guard size within three years or how about Clemens Mellon no I dont think it was rampant then , ty ...View More

Thanks for the great blog subject K Dub! I like the idea of grandfathering in all records, but would look at players and circumstances on a case by case basis. Bonds is a liar and a cheat thus NO HOF - Straight to jail. Clemens is a liar and a cheat, NO HOF - Straight to jail. There has got to be a no tolerance rule across the board. MLB needs to better define banned substances and make it clear to the player's union that if in doubt, a player must have substances okayed by the commish office. This would prevent further issues and questions like J.C. Romero's current suspension. Finally, the rest of these 103 names would be released to the public. Players testing positive need to be public knowledge. Three strikes and you're out? I might go for two. A warning 1st time and a pinkslip the next. ...View More

I would make them play by the rules no steroids mean no steriods, first time suspension second offense banned for life, remove any record that was achieve by a known steroid abuser and hand it to the next clean competitor on the list

BUt that is the thing...these drugs have taken tremendous strides as time has past...so maybe the first "PED's" weren't as "good" as they are now...I am just playing devils advocate here, but there is a possibility that others (older guys) took them and we will never know.

K Dub-Ba..
Speculation and fact are 2 separate issues. You can not punish someone because they might have done something. We KNOW this now and something has to be done about it. If they are let into the HOF this will show players that they can cheat, get caught, serve a suspension and thats really it. There has to be some sort of permanent ramifications for their actions...no?

Good point however as Cali states you can't penalize on suspicion, if the glove dont fit you must aquit lol , but on hard evidence,

I just sent an email thru MLB website asking for the address to send letters/petitions calling for Mr. Selig's resignation. $100.00 says I get no reponse.

It's a little late to punish all of those on the list, however they should all have to admit it publicly and apologise, then 50 lashes with a wet noodle!

Simple, start from square one. Enforce harsh(er) drug testing. Do what should've been done 16 years ago.

BoSox Ho..
Harsher drug testing, absolutely. But I think all fans want to know...How do you know who broke the records, if they did or didn't? The great game has a long tradition of statistics that are being broken and the players are in doubt. It's not about the other 103 to me, it's about the records. I would have records for pre 1900, 1900-1988 and 1988 - current.

I heard somebody bring up that suggestion last night Ruff. The problem with separating baseball records by era is that the players that weren't using PED's during 1988-current might be left out in the cold.

what about the HGH stuff you can't trace? the stuff that you could buy at GNC. .which is NOW illegal. . i think it's horse crap .. leave the past alone. .set up baseball for the future. .better testing. .more regular. . more stringent.. sever penalties for users TODAY. .

people can make several arguments about records. . juiced balls. . better bats. . better technology. . . better conditioning. . etc.. etc. . . you can never really acurately compare the HRs of Maris. .to McGwire. . or anyone. . Maris might of hit 77 today! we never know!

Listening to WEEI today they listed Teddy ballgames Ht and weight when he started and when he retired he was quit a bit bigger at retirement than he was as a rookie so weight gain alone tells nothing.

...you can't change the past..all you can do is to hope to have some rules and regulations in place that you can enforce going forward..and keep testing methods current and vigilant...cheaters will always find new ways..somehow testing needs to keep pace..

If you throw JUST ONE person out of baseball for good, things will start to change quickly. How many people have been caught throwing games since the 1919 White Sox? Offer immunity, if you did them come clean. If you dont and we catch you, from this day forward, you will receive a lifetime ban from MLB.

I agree 100% Cali. They should do the same with gov't officials. You screw up, you lose your pension. Oh...... and Bud Selig needs to go.
