The Price of Loyalty
August 29, 2008
Living in the UK means having to pay a certain price to stay loyal to the Red Sox.
Firstly, UK TV coverage of MLB is very limited. One station screens two games each week (one Sunday, one Wednesday) so we're at the mercy of whatever ESPN or FOX are covering on the day. Things do improve with the World Series, with every game being aired live (happy memories of 2004!).
So there is a financial cost involved for the loyal Sox fan in the UK because you have to put your hand in your pocket and shell out for MLB.tv - that being the only way to guarantee seeing every Sox game.
We'd all like a little more money in our pocket (wouldn't we?) but paying to see the games isn't the real cost of loyalty. The real cost is the affect the Sox have on your quality of life.
Being five hours ahead of Boston's EST, your average night game starts at 7.05pm... or 5 after midnight on our side of the water. 9 innings later and you hit the sack at 3.30am or 4am absolutely wrung out knowing you have to do it all again tomorrow.
Of course, work gets in the way of you watching every game (thank God for the highlights on MLB.tv) but when you don't have to work in the morning you just know you're going to be a zombie until midday.
But then, I wouldn't have it any other way. GO SOX!
