Reflections on the 2008 Season

ImpossDream67 ~RSM wrote this 1 month ago on |
When I showed up to play tennis on Thursday night, one of my long-time tennis friends said, "I didn't even want to come tonight because I thought you'd be in such a bad mood because the Red Sox aren't in the World Series." True, I am HIGHLY disappointed that they aren't facing off against the Phillies, but, since I have the hindsight of 52 years of following this team, I can put 2008 into some sort of perspective.
First of all, the Manny situation. It got...

Governors of RSN
|
|
ImpossDream67 ~RSM wrote this 2 months ago on |
Were any Sawxheads chosen to be governors of RSN? I say "chosen," because I really don't think they were elected. I was disappointed that some of the prime New York fans on this site were not selected, but I'd like to know if some of the people from the other states whom I voted for were chosen. I had the pipe dream that I would be the president of RSN in 2007 then another one that it was possible to be the "governor" in 2008. Just start singing...

Russ Gibson RIP

|
ImpossDream67 ~RSM wrote this 4 months ago on |
Russ "Gibby" Gibson, who was part of the 1967 "Impossible Dream" team, died on Sunday. Ironically, he passed at pretty much the same time as Dick Williams was being inducted into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Gibson was never a superstar; in fact, he struggled mightily, most at the plate (but not BEHIND the plate). He often talked about quitting baseball, thinking his MLB days were numbered, but Williams kept him going. He did get to play a few...

Hey--will anyone be at the game on Sunday? I got a last-minute ticket and will be driving down on Sunday morning! Of course, I'll just be one in about 36,000, but who's counting? See you in the rightfield GS seats...

ImpossDream67 ~RSM wrote this 4 months ago on |
Would there be a way to post who is running for governors, which states, what their names and e-mails are, for the entire site to see? I know that John Gilligan is running from NY, Jonathan Sherman from Kansas, and I am running from NY as well (although I am not posting here, since John has already done so--I will be voting for John myself). If there were a central place where we could go to refer, that would be great.

National Anthem at Lowell Game in Troy

ImpossDream67 ~RSM wrote this 5 months ago on |
I will be singing the National Anthem at the Lowell Spinners/Tri-City Valley Cats game in Troy, NY, on Sunday, July 20th! Now, if I could just get those pesky Red Sox people to let me to sing at Fenway Park...(It's on my "bucket list"!)

Just for fun, I responded to my alumni magazine (Northeastern University, from which I graduated before lots of you were born--LOL!) when they asked for stories from Red Sox fans in exile. They picked two stories to be included in the magazine that came out this week--and they picked mine! They used the photo that I have on this site with my daughter and son. I'm more proud to have their photos in the magazine than mine. But I do have to say, it boosts my RED SOX PRIDE...

Tim Russert, RIP

ImpossDream67 ~RSM wrote this 5 months ago on |
Just wanted to put a short piece on here about Tim Russert, who passed away today at the young age of 58. He was an amazing journalist and a baseball fan, although we won't discuss his favorite team. Last year, however, he was a good sport and came to Boston to "moderate" the "debate" between the "finalists" (I don't want to get into that, either! LOL) for president of Red Sox Nation. The people who were at that event had the great privilege of...

Fenway photos 1964

ImpossDream67 ~RSM wrote this 6 months ago on |
Here are four photos from Fenway Park, 1964. I know these are very small--almost postage-stamp size--but I don't know how to make them bigger (HELP?). If you can, notice how many empty seats there are, especially in the bleachers. During those days, bleacher seats were first-come, first-served--no assigned seats.
We have come a long way!

I had the great privilege of going to today's drama-in-Kenmore game. It was a pretty extraordinary one, and I know that others have already examined the ins and outs of the game, and that people know that there were a couple of times when the Sox had bases loaded with two outs. Pressure situation! Great stuff when you're a Red Sox fan, right (well, as long as you took your blood pressure meds! LOL).
Anyway, so we were sitting in our seats, biting our...

A new job. An unusually warm Friday afternoon. A 59-year-old diehard Sox fan tools down the Mass Pike wearing her lucky shirt (green with the red shamrock) in hopes of squeaking to the game on time...Tickets atop the legendary Green Monster await!
But once again, someone from Yankee-land gets in the way--temporarily. My new job entails handling media calls, and just as I got to Lee, my Blackberry rings. (I've never had one of these babies before, and I'm just...

Well, actually, I guess I should say MONSTER SRO, here we come! The Fischer family will be in the SRO section of the Monster on Friday night, April 18! I am even going to sneak out of my new job a couple of hours early. I can't wait! I am soooooo excited (does that make me sound like a teenager text-messaging on a cell phone??)! I have been thinking about all of you over the past few days. Is the Pope a Red Sox fan?
|
|
ImpossDream67 ~RSM wrote this 8 months ago on |
quick glance of the Yankees' schedule in April reveals a pretty strange stretch: they're on the road for almost three straight weeks from the 8th through the 28th, with a random two-game home stand jammed in the middle against the Red Sox on the 16th and 17th. That makes for an awful lot of traveling and some angry Yankees. But why is the schedule so funny?

So today I drove in the rain, snow, and muck to go to the EMC Club and listen to Bill Russell and several others pay tribute to Jackie Robinson as a kick-off to Black History Month. It was wonderful. A-Rod: NO SPRING CHICKEN

|
ImpossDream67 ~RSM wrote this 1 year ago on |
A-Rod is "almost a year younger" than Mike Lowell, reports one of today's papers on the "news and rumors" section. And that makes him MORE ATTRACTIVE to our team, at HIS PRICE, than Mike Lowell? Can someone explain this to me? A-Rod is no young 'un, either, but Theo and the rest would go after him? I CAN'T STAND THIS. If Mike Lowell goes, we need to find someone besides A-Rod. Period. But I am worried because once the baseball season is over, I will be lost.
Lost, once again, until pitchers and catchers report to spring training in February.
Lost, once again, because I really do live for the baseball season, whether it's the Red Sox, t-ball, Little League, or the Tri-City Valley Cats (an A-level minor league affiliate of the Houston Astros, who play close to where I live), I really just love this game....

There was a terrific story on Jacoby Ellsbury on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered" tonight. She said, "I told the guy, 'I don't care if it's a kid's size, I'll squeeze into it.'" And then Tom Goldman, the reporter, asked her whether or not Ellsbury was a talented baseball...

So...Here's another good bonehead comment from Joe Buck. When Blake gets a hit and goes to second base: "Now, with a runner at second, that cuts the Red Sox lead in half." WHAT? I didn't see Casey score, just get to second base. And, oh, by the way, Asdrobal Cabrera, in their minds, is about the best rookie second baseman they're ever seen. HELLO??????? About 20 years ago, I interviewed Edsel Walker, who had been a member of one of the Negro League teams. We talked a lot about baseball and where it was going. He shook his head when he talked about the "percentages" of the left-handed pitcher going against right-handed hitters. "In my day," he said, "you pitched until you lost, then they would bring in someone else and he pitched until he lost. That's how it went."
So today, we...
