Is The "B" A Goner?
December 9, 2008

Late last night Sean McAdam of the Boston Herald reported the Red Sox will unveil changes to the team’s logo in a press conference on Thursday. It also appears that the new changes will replace the Tiger Woods Sunday red uniforms the Sox unveiled before the 2004 season.
The buzz of a new logo has all of Red Sox Nation talking. There is no word on whether the new logo will replace the traditional Sox “B” or the primary logo that dates back to 1979. But the hat company New Era has already released a “new” authentic hat on their website. On the new hat, the cornerstone red “B” on a midnight blue has been replaced by the two red socks in the inner circle of the primary logo.
A primary reason for a change is the added revenue a new logo will bring to the team. Last year when the Tampa Bay Rays changed their nickname and colors, they saw a dramatic increase in revenue from fans who flocked to get the team’s new gear. But the Rays also did something before last season the Red Sox will probably not do. Before the season began any fan who brought back their old Rays jerseys and tee-shirts with the forest green color were given the same jersey with the new deep blue Rays logo, free of charge. That is not going to happen in Boston.
Although if you ask me, a new Sox logo will most likely go the way of the “Flying Elvis.” When the Patriots decided to throw out the Pat Patriot logo in 1992 in favor of the “Flying Elvis,” many fans were disappointed. They are still disappointed to this day and prefer Pat Patriot to the goofy looking design of the “Flying Elvis.”
Stay tuned to find out the fate of 29-year-old Sox logo.
