How to ruin a young pitcher
SoxisSickies found this 3 months ago on community.foxsports.com
The current management group of the Boston Red Sox has done, for the most part, an admirable job of protecting young pitchers while still developing them to the point where they have been able to help the big club, in many cases much sooner than people expected. The recent successes of Jonathan Papelbon and Jon Lester are two good examples.

The Red Sox dropped the ball with Clay Buchholz, though, in a big way. Maybe it was the lure of all that talent that shone through last September 1 when Buchholz, then only 22 years old and in his second big league start, threw a no-hitter against Baltimore, striking out nine, in a 10-0 victory.

I couldn't disagree more. They fail to mention in the article that Clay was sent down to the minors in the middle of those 10 losses after May 2nd. For the most part he had some great starts for the PawSox and I think we kept him down there a little longer than he thought was necessary just to give him some more time/extra confidence. When he fell apart that first start back, they had to think that was just a slight case of nerves. They had no way to know he'd lost all his confidence, they had to give him at least one more chance. Then I think it kinda snowballed and they did get caught up in the 'maybe next time will be better' mindset. But, they were trying to show that they had confidence in him to maybe help his confidence. I'm glad he didn't make his last start at Fenway because I believe he would've been booed off the mound and that would've killed all chances of him ever pitching well for us. I personally believe we gave him more chances than he deserved, but I also feel that if we sent him down too soon it would've been just as damaging. It's a lose-lose situation. Hopefully he'll get his head straight this off season. ...View More

Believe ..
They saw the no hitter and after that he had way to much pressure on him from everyone.Hopefully he can just settle down the rest of the year and for him will have a frest start next season with out so much pressure on him.

BOHICA....
Let's add three more names to this mix, on the plus side = Manny DelCarmen.......... On the minus side = Craig Hansen......... On the "jury's still out side" = Justin Masterson.

And I might add, which is why they're not rushing Daniel Bard along.

Masterson should have been left in the rotation and Bucholz should have stayed down in AAA....
