January 31, 2009

I wonder what the best baseball book is.Not necessarily just about the red sox.I asked once about best red sox books and now just wondering about baseball in general.Any suggestions?

I got for christmas one year, a book called "For the love of Baseball". Not a novel type book, more like a coffee table book with tidbits about some great players, stadiums, etc. A bit like a mini history book.

I know a place you can get that book Knarfy mentions for a few bucks...I got my copy for $1.97 plus $3.99 for media mail postage...and yes it's a great book.

Mine is "Now I Can Die In Peace" by Bill Simmons, the ESPN "Sports Guy" Very, very entertaining and it's about he Red Sox too. There are probably better out there but I love this one personally speaking

Oh and Seth Mnookin's book "Feeding The Monster" was also a very interesting book about the Sox rise to power this decade...I still want to get Michael Holley's book on the Sox haven't read that one yet

This is like asking a parent to pick their favorite kid. I like Ted Williams-Biography of an American hero by Leigh Montville. The Long Ball was very good about 1975. And for stats, ESPN's yearly Encyclopedia does the trick as well as Who's Who in Baseball.

Years ago, I read a very funny one about Bill Veeck, former owner of the White Sox, and all the antics he pulled in the name of getting people to games. It's called "Veeck...As in Wreck." It's an oldie but a goodie. Check out some of the old books by Grantland Rice, the "granddaddy of baseball journalism," and Bart Giamatti wrote some incredible short stories about baseball. These are off the beaten track, but they might make up a little for the snow that's on the field in Fenway! ...View More

I did like "Ball Four," too, but I have to say that when I read it at a very young age, I was SHOCKED!!! It really destroyed a lot of my thoughts about my baseball idols. I think if I re-read it now, I would just shrug things off. But back then... :)

I like the second Bouton work "I Managed Good, but boy, did they play bad" .. not for kids, but a great book. "The Wrong Stuff" by Bill Lee is a great read, as well.
