Now I throw my hat into the fire..
June 21, 2008
Alright! Enough is enough!!
I know I've been quiet the past few weeks, just been busy in the real-world. That doesn't mean I haven't had the chance to keep up with the blogs that have been posted on here, and - a vast majority of them are churning out good, positive, thought-provoking discussion, some humor, and of course the incessant Red Sox banter.
One thing I have noticed is there is a lot of..um..well..how can I put this lightly without sounding like a pompous asshole, hmmm..Well, there has been an overflow in regards to the amount of bi&*hing and whining that happens on this website. It's sad, it's really sad. Some of the fights sound like me and my ex-girlfriend after we've both been out drinking for four hours and decide to call one another to tell how awful we are.
Bandwagon fans? Pink hats? YO! Who cares?! I don't care if your great-great-great-grandfather played backup third base for the 1908 Boston Beaneaters for Christ sake, nor do I care if you were flipping through the channels last October and decided "Wow, Jacoby Ellsbury is hot" or "That David Ortiz looks as if he's having fun" or "Josh Beckett threatened my life at knife point to root for him, and only him". Whatever makes you a Red Sox fan is great, as far as I'm concerned - I wish there were more Red Sox fans in my area.
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm a baseball purist, to an extent and there is nothing in this world I would rather have on a summers day than a cold beer and a nice, four, five hour Red Sox discussion. (Well, there are a few things I would rather have, but that's not appropriate for this forum) I get ticked off when the following exchange occurs:
(Moo wearing his #9 hat backwards at Legends in Albany)
FanBoy: Who the hell is number 9? Sox don't have anyone wearing number 9!
Moo: That sir, is correct.
FanBoy: Well, is that your number or something?
Moo: No, it's actually Ted Williams' number. You know Ted Williams right? The last player to hit .400 in a season? The American War Hero and Baseball Legend..that Ted Williams, right?
But I don't blow up on the person, tell them how awful they and their children and their children's children will be. I actually like having FUN with bandwagon fans.
Seriously, try this one on for size. The next time you meet someone who you aren't sure is a 'wagoneer' or not, throw them some zingers. Ask them about Yaz, or their moral opinion on whether Johnny Pesky should be allowed in the dugout - in uniform. Question their position on trading Jeff Bagwell and Curt Schilling back in the day.
When they look up at you with that bewildered, deer in headlights look, smile, pat them on the back and buy them a beer. Then proceed to give them a little history lesson, and after you finish your last sip of that beer..order one, two, hell maybe even ten more rounds, turn to your newly astute friend and break the news to them that their small amount of knowledge about their 'favorite team' kind of balances out the small amount of money in your wallet, and let them know the rest of the drinks are on them - including the previous rounds :) There's a lesson in that that everyone can learn.
Until next time, resuming radio silence...Later haters!
