Jason Bay You're One Lucky Guy, Eh!
August 1, 2008
Dear Jason:
You and I have never met. The only things we have in common are that we both hail from Canada, and we both love the game of baseball. As a "canuck" who was thrust into a world called "Red Sox Nation", I hope you don't find it too presumptuous of me to tell you that you're ONE LUCKY GUY!
I know you told The Fan 590 (Toronto's version of WEEI radio), that if the Pirates were going to send you packing, you would "definitely welcome" a trade to the Blue Jays. I understand the sentimental value in wanting to play for Canada's only major league team, but with all due respect to the birds north of the border (I too grew up watching the Jays), not only have you landed in one of the premier divisions in all of pro baseball, you're with the defending world series champions, AND now part of "Red Sox Nation". Congrats!
You will be supported by devoted, die-hard baseball fans who will live and die with you, every at-bat -- pitch by pitch..
These fans will travel the globe just to watch you play -- from the Fens to Japan. They always gather to celebrate every game on Yawkey Way, and raise a glass to your performance - win or lose - at Game On! or at The Cask!
You join a red sox lineup that includes the likes of Big Papi, the reigning world series mvp, Mike Lowell, the reigning rookie of the year, Dustin Pedroia et al..
You will play at home in America's Most Beloved Ballpark, historic Fenway Park. You will play in front of sold out crowds EVERY NIGHT.. RAIN or SHINE..yes, I said.. EVERY NIGHT... Wow! Each home game you will be serenaded by "Sweet Caroline" - you'll grow to love it, trust me!
And, until the day you stop wearing Red Sox, you will always be part the "nation".
You're One Lucky guy...
We understand you're a 29 year-old, two time all-star, and a one-time rookie of the year, who has VERY big shoes to fill. You're going to have to fill the power void left by a guy who is a lock for the hall-of-fame. By the look of your 2008 stats...hitting .282, 22 homers and 64 RBI...you have the talent to get the job done.
All sox fans want in return?
A little Hustle, Lots of Heart, and Your Loyalty.
They want you to WANT to be part of their family.
Good Luck, Jason... and enjoy the ride....
