Jason Bay You're One Lucky Guy, Eh!
August 1, 2008

Dear Jason:

You and I have never met. The only things we have in common are that we both hail from Canada, and we both love the game of baseball. As a "canuck" who was thrust into a world called "Red Sox Nation", I hope you don't find it too presumptuous of me to tell you that you're ONE LUCKY GUY!

I know you told The Fan 590 (Toronto's version of WEEI radio), that if the Pirates were going to send you packing, you would "definitely welcome" a trade to the Blue Jays. I understand the sentimental value in wanting to play for Canada's only major league team, but with all due respect to the birds north of the border (I too grew up watching the Jays), not only have you landed in one of the premier divisions in all of pro baseball, you're with the defending world series champions, AND now part of "Red Sox Nation". Congrats!

You will be supported by devoted, die-hard baseball fans who will live and die with you, every at-bat -- pitch by pitch..

These fans will travel the globe just to watch you play -- from the Fens to Japan.
They always gather to celebrate every game on Yawkey Way, and raise a glass to your performance - win or lose - at Game On! or at The Cask!

You join a red sox lineup that includes the likes of Big Papi, the reigning world series mvp, Mike Lowell, the reigning rookie of the year, Dustin Pedroia et al..

You will play at home in America's Most Beloved Ballpark, historic Fenway Park.
You will play in front of sold out crowds EVERY NIGHT.. RAIN or SHINE..yes, I said.. EVERY NIGHT... Wow!
Each home game you will be serenaded by "Sweet Caroline" - you'll grow to love it, trust me!

And, until the day you stop wearing Red Sox, you will always be part the "nation".

You're One Lucky guy...

We understand you're a 29 year-old, two time all-star, and a one-time rookie of the year, who has VERY big shoes to fill. You're going to have to fill the power void left by a guy who is a lock for the hall-of-fame. By the look of your 2008 stats...hitting .282, 22 homers and 64 RBI...you have the talent to get the job done.

All sox fans want in return?

A little Hustle, Lots of Heart, and Your Loyalty.

They want you to WANT to be part of their family.

Good Luck, Jason... and enjoy the ride....

-- Hazel

ok...kinda obvious reflections on the game, but I can't say anything that you've said is wrong Hazel. What woould you say about how we would have done if Manny had still been in the line-up? HMMMMM

Can't say I saw the game. I'm on vacation in Canada with my family righ now, and unfortunately I can't get NESN up here. I also wrote this at 8pm and sent it into the editors at Sawxheads at that time (they can vouch for me). Reading my blog, I didn't say how the sox were going to do tonight. All I said was that his numbers were similar to Manny's. I didn't have my crystal ball with me - its still at the border. ...View More

Hazel is correct. We received her blog a little after the game began... Hazel, we have your crystal ball in Boston. Border Patrol returned it to the SawxHeads headquarters. :)

It's kind of ironic that the Sox offense would rely on the new guy to do the dirty work. Management needs to do more pruning to get rid of more dead wood and hire some good sticks. Same goes for the relief pitching. Shame they had to go 12 innings and only show one run for it. Jason did a hell of a job. Congrats kid!

Jason is a good kid, he's got a great attitude towards playing hard and has great talent at the plate and in left field - but most of all he's from BC like me.

This is the kind of warm welcome Jason Bay needed as a springboard to follow in the footsteps of many great Red Sox Left Fielders. The Staff, Members and guests at New England Sports Blog thank and Welcome two people who deserve the "Baywatch" treatment, Hazel Mae and Jason Bay. www.newenglandsportsblog.com/

Enjoy reading your take on the Sox. Your contributions are well received. Thank you. Had a non-baseball related question to ask of you. A lady friend asked me if I can find out where you bought the purple top that you wore on the 2nd to last Ultimate Red Sox Show. They never showed any store credits. Do you recall? She is quite curious.
