'Resiliency: Never Say Never'
August 22, 2008

My heart’s all over the world tonight. Resiliency is the name of the game, and lately I’ve been feeling a little nostalgic—especially in terms of the Red Sox. With the unfortunate news of former captain Carl Yastrzemski falling extremely ill to heart problems, I sat at my desk and thought of ways to properly pay tribute to the Red Sox legend. I peered around my room for inspiration; the peach walls adorned with accolades from an athlete’s past (whoa, alliteration much?), posters of Patriot gallantry and Red Sox victory—not to mention the various Teen People cut-outs of Tom Brady and Josh Hartnett. But perhaps the most inspirational piece of artwork that I found in my room, did not come from a newspaper or a magazine, but was a creation of my own ingenuity and flair: a beverage napkin I saved from a Patriots game I went to last year. Okay so yea, it seems a little silly, but this 3x3 paper cube has a little more meaning than you would expect folks, and that's because I doodled all over it. Now don’t get me wrong, I may be immature at times, but this is not your average finger-painting session we’re talking about. What I inscribed on the napkin has a little more rhyme and reason.

I’m poetic, so I wrote quotes.

Here’s what it says:

~ You can tell a lot about a person by how he handles a rainy holiday, lost luggage, and a flat tire ~

This one’s for you Yaz. No one can ever imagine the heartbreak a family endures when a loved one is sick and struggling for their life – but we all get through it together. The happiness of your life depends on the quality of your thoughts, and if it is any consolation to his family—there are hundreds and millions of people in this world who are just itching to see you get better. Life goes on even if you are sick, and to you number 8—we wish you nothing but the safest and healthiest recovery. Sunny days are approaching, and this too shall pass.

~ Keep learning, earning, and yearning ~

For my hometown hero, Alicia Sacramone. I’ve known the Olympic gymnast since I was in 4th grade, were distant in middle school, and became close in high school, and let me just say, that she is no ordinary gymnast. Relentless, ambitious, and compassionate when facing adversity on an international level—not to mention gorgeous. In other words—no more cruel jokes about my friend (HmmHMMM BARSTOOLSPORTS.COM, you are in the DOG house). But seriously though—how could you even DARE to compare Alicia Sacramone’s mishap at the Olympics: a Boston girl with a heart of gold, not to mention team captain of USA Gymnastics, and someone who juggles being a full-time student at Brown University with a full-time gymnastics agenda 45 mins away, to Bill Buckner’s little “incident” during the 1986 World Series?!?! SHAME. ON. YOU. Not even a fathomable comparison. The SawxFawx is fuming. She is an extremely resilient person and would not have followed her Olympic dreams to this point (after I watched her over-work herself and fail to make the 2004 team, which I am convinced she would have) if she did not have incredible talent. She picked up the pieces and kept going. Bottom line. In life, where we fall, we jump up and run that much harder towards the next goal in our lives. The unconditional love and support Winchester has for my friend is amazing—just remember girl, learn, earn, and yearn.

~ Sit still in the boat that carries you across deep water ~

Hey Clay Buchholz, it’s really not the end of the world. Portland Maine is really cool place isn’t it? Great bars and stationary stores (summer camp, give me a break). Recoil and collect yourself for a significant playoff push, the bullpen band needs you and that wilting right-arm of yours. You did pitch a no-hitter last year didn’t you? You have it in you, because Theo would not have you on the team if you didn’t. They are testing your patience, and your mental stability. Cry if it makes you feel better, then stiffen your upper lip and show the world whose boss. Actions make history my man, so paint a masterpiece up there and someone will come get you when you’re ready.

The Red Sox are in Toronto and resiliency is in the cards for our boys. Do it for Yaz. Do it for Alicia. Do it for Clay who's crying in Portland. And certainly, do it for yourselves guys, because you are in desperate need for a little resiliency (and nudging) in order to tip-toe into that Wild Card slot over the Twins. The Patriots have yet to prove their worth after a heartbreaking 07 campagin - can you do better?

And PLEASE, for the love of the Spanish language Jerry Remy…bite your tongue on the “BWEN-AAS NO-CHASE AHH-MIGOS” because it’s painful to hear. For everyone who thinks I’m being a little hard on the NESN celebrity, it’s because he’s saying it wrong: its ‘buenos noches amigos,” noche is a masculine word and the adjective needs to correctly conjugate with the noun (Spanish minor at school ahhhh-thank-you). Anyone remember the “DISFRUIT-IN EL JUEGO” (disfrutan el juego: enjoy the game) that used to accompany the welcoming motto?

That’s another rant for another day ~ bienvenidos a Canada mis amores, todo es posible.

Good stuff. That was great. Funny, informative and I think correct. Clay will get it together. Sacramone did a great job leading her team through some tough times and it was pretty amazing they even got silver and had a chance for gold. Our thoughts and prayers are always with you Yaz. Great job. Thank you!!!!!

Hmmmmm. I just woke up but hopefully I can hit everything. Yes, get better Yaz, you are in my thoughts and prayers and even though you are recovering from some heavy stuffs, happy Birthday to you. And I wish you many more. Don't really follow the Olympics but good luck Alicia. Billy Buckner: I cried when you finally came home this year, Boston Forever. Clay; You didn't look like you believed you belonged on the mound, fix that in Portland, come back with a vengence. Yes I hate domed stadiums but we can turn it up and win the series in Toronto. Anybody that's thinkin Wild Card before we're eliminated in the division, suck it up, we concede nothing until the end. To the Sox pen; keep on truckin, keep on percussing. Tu ojos me hacen recordar las estrellas en el cielo. Me gusta comer acietunas de tu hombligo. Escribe en su cuaderno con un boligrafo o con queso. I can be charming in two languages, I can be sick and twisted in two languages, and I can be goofy in two languages. Keep the Faith; 14/09. Ps. We're chipping in to send you an autographed Ben Roethlisberger 8 x 10 ...View More
