Is there anybody besides me...
October 9, 2008

Who is NOT worried about this series with Tampa Bay? They're no more than an adequate ball club. Since when does adequate make you the best? Yeah, yeah I know, they won the AL East, the "toughest division in the Majors." Uh, really? Our beloved Red Sox have been plagued by injuries since, literally, day one, haven't even seen the services of Curt Schilling, a probable future Hall of famer. The Yankees, that other perennial powerhouse, had lousy pitching and were in a funk offensively all year. Toronto played decent and actually came on strong the last month or so. But, too little, too late. And then there's the hapless Orioles, who I've always had a soft spot in my heart for, (going back to the Jim Palmer, Frank and Brooks Robinson days) they certainly didn't have much going this year. If anything, it seems to me the Rays won by default. If our guys bring their A game, execute well, and make few mistakes, they should be golden.

Our guys, with one hand tied behind their back, have continued to show us their tenacity and depth, recently making the team with the best record look like amatuers and darn near winning that "toughest division" outright. Of course, anything can happen in baseball,as in life, and if it's one of those "stars in their courses" things, the Rays could prove me wrong. But I don't see it happening. Imagine, in your heart of hearts, painful though it might be, the sad faces of our guys in the dugout, in a game 6 or 7 down by a few runs, looking at the end of their season. The images just don't come to me, and it's not because I'm biased, I simply can't picture it. On the other hand, pictures come to my mind, speedily and readily, of Tampa sulks and moues! Indeed, one of my chief fears, is that out of frustration, if/when the Red Sox are up by two or three games, that they might try some headhunter garbage. Anyway, if I was a gambling man, I'd pick the Sox in 5....6 tops!      Let's Go Red Sox!!!!!

I think that we will win this series, for sure. But honestly the Rays do worry me a bit. The problem is their stats are NOTHING above average, but they have good pitching and TIMELY hitting. They are the 13th worse offense in the AL (out of 14 teams), and they are second in pitching...If we can score a few runs, and Beckett, Daisuke, and Lester do their jobs we should win this series running away. BUT if we don't hit and don't score runs, we could be in for a long series. That being said...Sox in 5! ...View More

I agree with K Dub, the DRays are a little too chippie to not take them serious. That said SOX in SIX.

I think (and hope) the Sox will win this, but the Rays have the best record of the four remaining teams. They also play in the AL East. They, TOO, suffered injuries - particularly Longoria... they are definitely more than "adequate" and are still a legitimate threat to win this series.

Yes, there isn't a team in the bigs that didn't suffer SOME injuries, THAT being said the Rays were quite fortunate this season and were fairly healthy for most of the year. They lost Longoria, we lost Lowell, Papi, Beckett, Youk, JD Drew, and Daisuke. We had SIGNIFICANTLY more injuries than the Rays, and I feel that the Rays are "adequate". As I said, what is going to come down to is the Sox offense, that is where the series hinges. If we hit, we win, and we win with relative ease. If we don't hit we lose. Tampa has about as much parody on their team as any other...Good pitching (#2 in the AL) and horrible offense (second to last in the AL). ...View More

K Dub-Ba..
The only way the Sox lose is if they beat themselves. All the stats go out the window when the umpire hollers "PLAY BALL"!! The game is played with a fickle little, stitched together tanned white horsehide ball and fragile bats. Anything can happen, but I continue to believe that all the hype about how great the Rays are, is just that, hype. Bully for them, and I mean that, that they turned around there team so effectively in one year. That's great progress. I just believe that some pressure, skillfully applied, will tumble them like a house of cards. One other thing, my gut tells me that the Sox's slumbering lumber is about to have a break out series! Let's Go Red Sox!!!!! ...View More

Score early and often. Try and stay away from having to rally late against Balfour, Howell,& Wheeler. We are the better ballclub. The RED SOX WILL BE VICTORIOUS!
