WHY THE REDSOX WILL NOT LOSE TO JOE MADDON
October 8, 2008

No matter what product a franchise puts on the field there must be a leader in the dugout and the clubhouse. Our leader is Francona their leader is Maddon.

Let's examine this a little bit.

Francona and Maddon Head to Head
Francona Maddon
University University of Arizon Laffayette College
College World Series Won 1980 None
Major League Teams Played For Expos, Cubs, Reds, Indians, Brewers None
Series won as a player 1981 vs. Phillies (NLDS) None
Series won as a manager 2004 & 2007 World Series None
Managing Career White Sox, Tigers, Indians, Phillies, Rangers, A's, REDSOX  Angels, Rays
Where do they rank in postseason history 1st manager in MLB history to win his first 8 postseason games No postseason record

It must also be noted that Maddon lost out to Francona as the Manager for the REDSOX postion in 2004. He should get used to that feeling.

Nice piece - thanks for taking the time researching this - but you know what - it means NOTHING! What happens on the field in 2008 is all that matters now - not where they've been or what they've done in the past. If your point is to say that the Sox experience will win out over TB's inexperience then you could have just said that! But that factor alone won't decide the series winner. This is a different Rays team now - we should not take them lightly. ...View More

Yeah but just saying "it" isn't as much fun as making a case for it.

SoxDog67--what happened in the regular season has nothing to do with what will happen in the post season, just ask the Angels. It's a the second season, all records are set at 0-0, the Rays don't start the series 1-0 simply because they won the season series.

Believe ..
B.I.L. -- and I didn't say that - all I am saying is this is a different Rays team with plenty of talent and will not be a pushover in this series -- I would like to predict the Sox winning in 6 but I'm superstitious and won't do it ;-).

SoxDog67--my point is the game is not just decided by what happens on the field. What happens in the dugout also counts. Maddon has no experience in postseason play. It does not matter if his team can execute it, if he makes a bad call its a bad call. We all saw that play out with the botched suicide squeeze play. It was a bad call by MS and poorly executed at the plate.

hold - Well Madden could screw up, but I don't think it will happen -- he seemed to do a pretty good job over 162 games and a 4 game ALDS. But, please don't make me try to defend anything Rays here but to say the Sox have any advantage because of this is not something I believe in. Plus do you ever here/read the criticism Francona gets around these parts and he's won twice in 4 years? ...View More
