No Room For Haters
November 20, 2008
Our illustrious Red Sox Captain has recently come under fire by the media because of his choice of agent representation, and its salary requests. The important thing to remember is that these awful, drawn-out negotiations go on in sports all the time...its how things are done. The infamous Scott Boras is known for his smug attitude and outlandish requests throughout baseball. Do I wish that our star catcher had chosen a different agency to represent him this time around, yes, but I understand that this is probably his last big contract....and he is simply trying to make the best deal he can. If you could afford it, would you get the best Doctor for your child, or the best Lawyer to represent you in a law suit? Of course you would. Tek is simply trying to get a good last deal in his professional catching career. I am sure that an agreement can eventually be reached between Theo and Boras on Tek, because any alternative would definitely be disasterous for both parties involved.
I am optimistic for this matter to be resolved ,because yesterday when Theo Epstein hald a short media conference involving the Coco Crisp trade for relieving pitcher Rodriguez (KC), Epstein mentioned that the incoming pitcher was "Controllable" twice. Who would be the controller? Will they be relying on the vast skills of their resident Guru behind the mound? Probably, which means he will likely be signing our Captain soon. God Bless You Theo.
Recently, I came across an article written by the Associated Press 12/24/04 in reference to the last time the Boston Red Sox signed Jason Varitek. Theo Epstein: "It's not every day you're lucky enough to sign a player who embodies everything you want your franchise to be. When you have that player, you don't let him get away." Mr. Epstein, the time is here to make that commitment again.
Offensively, Varitek can definitely make improvements. A winter's rest, extra batting practice, and a healthy body (which you have) and a clear mind will all turn him into the powerhouse player we were accustomed to. His intense preparations, demeanor with players, managers and pitchers are unmatched anywhere in baseball today. He thinks, eats and sleeps baseball, and that is what makes him a winner....and that in turn makes his team winners by association. I have complete faith that Theo will bring back Jason Varitek, and the Sox will reward him with another ring in October.
