KEEPING UP WITH THE JONE'S
January 4, 2009

We keep hearing about how much better the Yankees have gotten this season and we have to start spending some money so we can keep up with them.  Let's look at this a little deeper.

2004: After losing the 2003 World Series the Yankees opened up their checkbook and added Kenny Lofton, Gary Sheffield and A-Rod to their line up.  They also added Kevin Brown, Javy Vazquez, John Lieber, Tommy Gordon, and Paul Quantril to their pitching staff.  Mid-season they also picked up Esteban Loaiza and John Olerud.  That's a whole lot of big names, big numbers, and big money.  And what happened?  That expensive collection of talent went on to win 101 games and then be the team that was responsible for the biggest post season collapse in baseball history.  182 million (That's not counting the deferred money from A-Rod's contract as well as the 15 million the Rangers paid that year or Kevin Brown's salary) just doesn't buy what it used to.

2005: Let's spend some more money and add in Randy Johnson, Carl Pavano, and Jaret Wright (One first ballot HOF, the other two had won 15 games the year before)  Let's also add in Mike Stanton, Tony Womack, and Tino Martinez to get some October MOJO from previous seasons.  That 208 million $ payroll got eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

2006: Let's spend a whole lot of money on Johnny Damon, pick up Bobby Abreau, Mike Myers, Kyle Farnsworth, Octavio Dotell, Ron Villone, Terrance Long, and let's get knocked out of the ALDS by Kenny Rogers and the Tigers.  That was 194 million $  (Not counting Bobby Abreau's salary or the 15 million of A-Rod's contract the Rangers paid of course)

2007:  We got Dice-K so the Yankees counterd with Kei Igawa (Who has spent most of his time in the minors)  Let's sign Andy Pettitte, Luis Vizcaino, Jose Molina,  and Doug Mientkiewicz,.  And does anybody else remember Roger Clemens's address from the Papal Balcony at Yankee Stadium (That's the onwers' box for those of you that are slow on the uptake) and Susan Walthman's "OH MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS!!!"  There is 189 million (Not counting A-Rod's 15 million from the Rangers) to get knocked out of the ALDS by Paul Byrd and the Indians.

2008: Let's go in a different direction and use boy wonders Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, and Joba Chamberlain.  Anybody else remember the Generation Trey hype?  We'll sign A-Rod to a ten year deal, we'll add in LaTroy Hawkins, we'll steal Xavier Nady and Domasso Marte from the Pirates, pick up Sidney Ponson and Richie Sexson from the scrap heap, even make a trade for Pudge Rodriguez.  There is 209 million $ for a third place in the East finish.

And these are the Jone's you wanna keep up with?  Yeah, to have over 200 million $ worth of payroll every year and still come up short.  It's a pretty sad state of things when people are afraid of a Yankee team just because they brought in some big names by spending a lot of money but haven't even played a game between the lines yet.

Let the Spankees do what they do and we'll(Red Sox) do what works for us. Two championships/many playoff berths lately, seems like we(Red Sox) have a pretty good formula without spending as much as the Spankees. We need to trust Theo/Red Sox owners, etc. They haven't failed us yet!

Well done bro! Well thought out and written. Makes you open your eyes a little bit more after reading what you explained and putting this years spending spree of the Yanks into a little more perspective.

Very well put! Then they sign the 'top' pitchers in the Free Agent class, Sabathia and Burnett and everyone is ready to hand them the WS trophy. Bad ownership + poor showings = bad signings. If you want greener grass than your neighbor, try watering, seeding and fertilizing. Buying new grass every year just won't do it.

We won 95 games last season, one of the teams that we play 22 (I believe) times per season just improved (on paper) quite a bit...so do you really think that we go into the 2009 season with what we have, and win 95 games again...the way it sits right now, we don't. the only way we win 95 games is if Lowell, Papi and Beckett are 100% and the only one that I am close to sold on is Beckett. ...View More

Good Blog. I'm not saying I'm scared of the Yankees, but overall the entire AL East has improved, and I understand that this Red Sox team is capable, but the questions on our club frighten me a little bit. What I'm saying is that Tampa is good, and they proved it - and the Yankees are good as well, they will be better than last season - its just how it's going to work. The only team really not to fret about is Baltimore and Toronto to a lesser degree. But the AL East, the strongest division in MLB has improved drastically, and by saying 'keep up with the jones' I mean that they have to fill the holes with premium talent. I'm not saying go out and frantically spend loot..but make good aquisitions. What those are? Well I don't know - i'm not the GM. But good blog. I guess I'm just not using the write words. ...View More

Great blog!! I've stated this before, but worth reiteration.... what the Yanks have on paper is a mighty thing. But what they have on the field is a bunch of moneys running around with no chemistry, screaming "me me me me", showboating, whining, and NOT winning

Love_The..
We'll be playing the Yankees 18 or 19 games, none of which will be decided on paper. Yes Papi, Beckett, Lowell, and Drew are question marks. Then again over the course of 162 games EVERYBODY is a question mark. Lester could blow out his elbow, Papelbon could have shoulder problems again, Youkilis could pull a hammie, hell Peddy could even run into Eric Byrnes on his skateboard, break his leg, and miss a month or two, that's baseball. ...View More

I understand that it isn't played on paper...but since the season hasnt started as of yet, all we have is the ability to look at the paper. And on paper or not, the Yankees improved and we have done nothing, and done so with obvious injury problems going into the season. Like I said, we ended the season with Papi, Lowell and Beckett not anywhere near 100%...the Yankees have a healthy CC Sabathia, a healthy AJ Burnett, and a healthy Mark Teixeira (to go with the rest of their guys that are healthy. Mark my words, if Papi, Beckett, and Lowell are not healthy, and we do nothing more this off season to secure up this line up, we won't have a hell of a lot to talk about come September 2009. ...View More

Nicely put, Michael. I am not worried until I see this "great on paper" team start taking names and kicking ass come spring, if it even happens.

Uh yeah, NOBODY is 100% after a 162 game season. If all we have to go on is what's on paper then the 2005 Yankees look much more menacing to me than the 2009 ones. Come September of 09, you'll be able to get good nights sleep whilst the rest of us go down with the ship. Not really in my nature to give anything before a pitch has been thrown though.

I'm sorry to disagree, the AL East is not much improved. Ny is a little better. If Burnett helps them, then Toronto is not better. TB has not done anything and Baltimore is actually looking to trade Roberts, but they haven't improved. As for other AL, Angels aren't as good, and the Sox do play them. White Sox are the same. What Michael is saying, you can spend all the money you want, but it has to be on the right players, and their track record has not been that. ...View More

Come on Buff, you know that I am going to be right there with ya. My point is that the injuries that Lowell and Ortiz injuries were a couple of things...lingering and serious. It wasn't just a quick injury that they were able to recover from quickly, it wasn't a sprain or anything like that...the injuries lingered and were not close to being remidied by the end of last season. And I know that you are a "pitching wins championships" kind of guy, and you have to admit that if BOTH staffs are healthy, CC, AJ, Wang match up pretty well with Beckett, Daisuke and Lester...regardless of what happens over the rest of the off season it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. ...View More

As some people say....we had a good team last year ..so why mess with it ...but in my Opinion (yes i have one)...we could certainly use some better Pitchers
01/05/2009 9:14 AM
♥ Its ..
We have a great rotation. I would put up Beckett, Lester and Matsuzaka against any other top 3 in the bigs. I also think that Brad Penny might do alright as a #4 or #5 guy (though I am still a bit worried about him), and we know that Wake is good for probably a dozen wins. We got one good middle releif guy from KC, and I still would love to see Smoltz here in the pen...just to have another bridge guy to get to Paps...I am going to stick with that we need a good solid bat. ...View More

Step away rom the "Paper" and no one's feelings or hopes will be hurt. Looking good on paper means squat, ask the stock market analysts. Great blog.

Agree with everything on the Yankees. Not only doesn money not buy happiness, it doesn't buy championships either. They've proven that this decade. That doesn't mean Theo and Co. should sit around with their thumbs up their behinds and do nothing. Add a starter (and a little bit better then Brad Penny, please?) and re-sign Tek alraedy. He's the heart and soul of that team.
