no hitter
May 20, 2008

I'm not even sure how to put last night into perspective. When Bucholz had his no hitter last fall it was fun and exciting. With Lester it was gut-wrenching. All through the ninth inning I was afraid of having a heart attack. I tried to imagine what was going through the minds of the batters that we faced. Would they really want to ruin such a historic moment to bolster their own stats? Was it fair to ask that of them? And then the last strike out came. Watching Lester embrace Francona I actually cried (generally reserved for the post-season). I'm not sure I remember the last time I was that genuinely happy for another person. I was right, there are no words. Curious how others reacted?

I cried too..one thing though, you can't take anything away from Lester, like suggesting that the batters wouldn't try to boost their own stats and maybe just not hit. I know that's not really what you're saying but figured I'd mention it. Having said that... The Sox are an extremly emotional team for alot of people. Some of us, have alot of history and have shed many tears throughout. But my husband cried at that moment too..and he's only been a fan for about 6 years now. His tears were for that very moment, the passion exhibited and the struggles it obviuosly took to get there, especially for Lester ie, his fight with cancer. Mine were for that moment too but they were also for the years of sorrow 'no more'. For the fact that my dad, who was a lifetime Red Sox fan never saw them win a Championship before he died though he stood by them all the way. And EVERY moment like that is just one more 'pinch' to my very being that this really ISN'T a dream or a 'fluke' but the real deal. It is one more realization that we have alot of young talent to keep us strong for years to come...and I think, 'Boy, my dad would LOVE this!' and then I realize he has a ring side seat for all of this and sometimes, I can even hear him cheering. There's always a percentage of history in my tears but also there is much promise of bigger an better things to come. ENJOY THE RIDE!!!! ...View More

I cried. And I kept remembering how Schilling blew it in the 9th by shaking off Tek and how amazing it is these young pitchers are able to trust his call and execute and get the no-no. Have you seen the Kevin Costner movie "For the love of the game"? Great movie!!
