What the Sox mean to me (part 2)
February 8, 2008
Wow, this is very disorganized, but I have some time on my hands now so I thought I would finish my Sox story. From my early childhood up until 2003 are a blur. Some of my fondest memories, as I had mentioned before were watching Mo Vaughn crushing homers into the bleachers at Tiger Stadium. I remember Nomar, his grace, the way he played the game was magical. I truly loved him. I remember watching the 1999 All-Star Game when Pedro was lights out. I don't think Ill ever forget that either. I remember when we got Manny, I swore he was the saving grace, it turns out, he was more of a saving grace than I could imagine. I think I left off at 2005 with my other blog, 2005 was a weird year for me. It was the first year that I had ever had a steady girlfriend. Like I had mentioned before, I met Ry in the spring of 2005. The Sox came to town twice in 2005 I believe. Which was great because I got to go to six games that year. They came once in May, early May. I had scored some really great tickets for the first game of the series. First baseline about 10 rows up from the Red Sox dugout. I went to that game with my buddy Scotty. I remember that game for two reasons: (1) It was FREEZING! We had sign up for one of those credit cards just to get a stadium blanket so we could cuddle. (2) We almost caught a foul ball, I have never even come close to catching one and one came right at us. To bad it landed one row and one seat to the left of us. My pops and I went to the other two games, nothing really exciting happened, we sat in the bleachers and froze our asses off. The Sox also came back later in the summer. It was mid August. This was Rys first Sox game, and I was super excited. We got to the stadium at 530 and watched BP, nothing special really happened, but she took a liking to Johnny, I guess it was the hair. Hell I didn't care as long as she liked someone. I also got my Sox tat in 2005, it was a birthday present to myself. I knew I always wanted a Sox tat, and I finally decided to get it. It is by far my favorite. I just got the Sox on my ankle. One day I hope to have my whole leg dedicated to the Sox. I skipped class everyday to watch the Sox lose to the White Sox in the ALDS. Ry said she saw a side of me shes never seen before, but she loved me anyways. 2006, Wow, 2006 was a great year. When the Sox came to the Dirty D, my pops got me seats 3 rows up, directly behind the Sox dugout. Best seats I have ever had. I took Ry, I wanted her to experience the game, we were so close that we could actually here the players talking. Papi and Manny went back to back. Teky also hit a knock. Great game! 2006 was also the year that I got the greatest gift anyone has ever given me. Ry took me to Fenway and Boston for my 21st birthday. We arrived on a Thursday night and I had all day Friday to do Red Sox related stuff. We took the tour, which was amazing, if you guys ever get a chance to do it, please do! The only thing is that I was disappointed that we didn't get to go on the field, and that NONE of the Clowns in my tour group knew the retired numbers. I think I was the only one. The one thing I remember about the tour was that I touched everything, I wanted to feel the history. So I walked behind the group, and just touched, most of the time I couldn't even hear what the tour guide was saying, I don't think it mattered, this was something I wanted to experience by myself. After the tour we had lunch at GameOn, very cool bar! Good food, good drinks! The game was also on Friday night, Friday September 29. The Sox were out of the playoff hunt, but Fenway was still electric. I will NEVER forget that place. We got there at 530 of course, and watched BP, We had Grandstand tickets, section 4, so during BP I went down to the warning track and filled my pocket up with as much dirt as I could, haha, so now I have a little piece of Fenway. We won the game, I was trashed, singing Sweet Caroline and Dirty Water. I ate 3-4 Fenway Franks. By far one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I tell you what Boston is amazing, aside from the Sox its a gorgeous city. 2007, I had just started my new job when we got Dice-K, I was in the office, and I jumped up and did a fist pump. Everyone just looked at me. It was pretty funny. When the Sox came to the D this year it was HOT, I went to the Saturday and Sunday night games. Saturday night Ry and I scored an extra two tickets, so we invited another couple to come with us. Of course they were Tigers fans, and I am pretty sure they were bandwagoners, if you thought the Sox had bandwagon fans after the Tigers won the Pennant in 2006 EVERYBODY was a Tigers fan, but before 06 you couldn't give away those tickets, I HATE, HATE, HATE that sh*&t. But the game was great, 14 innings, the only bad part was that Tigers won. So I had to hear it the whole car ride home. Ry and I took my little brother to the Sunday game. We saw Dice-K get rocked, it sucked, but I did see one of the greatest catches ever. Curtis Granderson leaped over the center field fence to rob a home run. It was amazing. I started working at the Detroit News in August. My nickname quickly became Boston. I watched most the first game of the ALCS at the news. They were all rooting for Cleveland just to bust my balls. The next couple of games were a blur, and the next thing I know we were down 3-1 and facing elimination, and I had a BIG, BIG problem, my mom and dads surprise 25th anniversary party was on the night of game 5. I had been planning the party for months and I was worried I would miss the game. So we get to the place and set up, and low and behold, they had one big screen TV. So the Sox game was on, and at the end of my speech to my mom and dad, I threw in the "LETS GO RED SOX!" for good measure. I was HAMMERED drunk by the end of the night, dad and I were doing bowler makers, why, because we are dumbasses. I remember it plan as day, he told me that if the Sox won that game, it would be over for the Tribe. he was right, and the rest is history. I watched some of the World Series at the News, and I made sure to rub it in their faces. Ry and I decided to stay in for game four. I got a 6er of Sammy Adams Octoberfest (MY FAVORITE BEER!) and we watched the game. I was quiet, not wanting to jinx anything. Ry went to bed early, she had to work in the AM, so I was alone. I almost would rather it this way. After the final pitch I stood up and pumped my fist, not yelling just a simple fist pump. I called my pops, we talked for about 20 min. He said I should go to bed, I had to work early the next morning as well. So i took his advise and went to bed. I think that's it for now........I got an exciting season coming up though. Ry and I are going to Yankee Stadium July 4th weekend for the Sox/Yanks series. I scored tickets to the Thursday game. I am very excited about that. Also my buddy Scotty and I are going to Wrigley, I know this is not Sox related but I want to see Wrigley. Thanks for reading, much respect to RSM and long live the NATION!
