HOMERUN LEADERS season by season!~~ from hot dogs & beer to Hgh and clear
September 25, 2008

Over the years I have spent a lot of time thinking about the history of the homerun and the impact its had on the game.  I have considered all the variables in my lifelong pursuit/assessment of the best homerun hitter of all-time and the best single season homerun production and the like. A lot of it was spawned by the religious zealot way I followed Yaz and Rice in what I refer to as my early years 1976-1980....the good old days...when life was full of optimism and youth....I remember those seasons with the glow of magical impossibilty..but there was always some bright spots..some brighter..some less brilliant.

I remember honestly believeing Rice would hit 65 homeruns in 1978....George Foster from Cinncinati was damn menacing too....I remember Griffey Jr in Seattle in mid-90's..I swore he would hit 70, but Scary Barry & The Big Heads beat him to the punch....yea, the steroid punch..ahahhaaa...spiked by Anderson in more ways than one....*

BABE RUTH WILL FOREVER BE THE HOMERUN KING!!!!!!!! The numbers don't lie..Ruth didnt technically "invent" the homerun, but he might as well have. RUTH changed the way we view baseball like the way Elvis & The Beatlles changed the way we view Music....RUTH CHANGED THE WAY THE GAME WAS PLAYED almost singlehandedly.....Look at Ruth from 1918 to 1931....he won HR title 12 out of 14 years!!

Roger Maris in 1961 was a great year but he had more games to hit 61...How many would Ruth have hit in 162 games??? do the math over the years....Even Hammerin Hank knows the truth..Long live Mr Ruth!!!

Ruth was great, but he did come along at a time that the game was making some of it's biggest changes. If you look at the other spikes in Homeruns you'll also see trends. In the 1930's they were coming off the depression and wanted fans back. And how did they do that, with offense. In 1961 and 1977, Maris and Foster, both years of expansion. Pitching wins championships, but Homeruns fill up the ballparks.
