What we had here last night, was a good old fashioned pitchers duel , Beckett was good but Haren was better , over seven innings the aces did battle . Both pitchers had more than quality starts ,
Beckett 7-5 improved his era in the loss, but gave up both the snakes runs and five hits in his eight innings of work, he struck out eight and allowed two runs or fewer for the fifth time in his last six starts . However Haren was dominant over seven shut out innings limiting Boston to two hits and out pitching Beckett in the process . Aardsma was respectable in relief allowing just 1 hit 2 walks and 2 ks in his shut out inning of relief.
Boston threatened in the eighth as they loaded the bases for JD Drews sacrifice fly off Tony Pena, but Manny ended the inning by lining to third with two on and two out to end the threat.
Brandon Lyon pitched the ninth for his 16th save in eighteen chances. and the Snakes who were swept by Minnesota over the weekend have won just seven of their past 21 road games, Boston meanwhile has dropped to one and three over their current six game homestand,
In other sox news Kevin Youkilis left the game before the start of the fifth inning after getting hit under the right eye by a Lowell one hop throw during innfield practice , he was taken for tests which turned out to be negative .,Branden Moss then made his major league debut at first. The other Red sox first baseman Sean Casey dropped his appeal and had begun serving his five day suspension for his part in the tampa bay brawl.
Tonight at the Fens Justin Matsterson, 4-1, 3.00, takes on Doug Davis, 2-3, 3.65. As the Sox once again will go snake hunting and attempt to bag some trophies for the home crowd.
