JD Drew Mea Culpa
August 12, 2008

I was one of the people on WEEI last season who jumped all over the acquisition of JD Drew and I have to backtrack and apologize for the knee-jerk (with the emphasis on jerk) reaction to his first year in a Red Sox uniform.  Yes it's true that he slumped badly after a good start in April 07,  and yes I've said that he looks like he doesn't give a sh*&t when he's playing the game.  But 2 things have changed my overall opinion of Drew, one being the fact that he had a baby boy with health issues last year.  Being the father of a 2 year old son, I can hardly imagine how much of a distraction it would be for me to have to concentrate on a new job, a new city, the pressure of the spotlght in Boston, all while worried sick about my little boy.  So we in the "sports media" cut him some slack and then were pleasantly surprised to find him a hero against Cleveland last year in the playoffs.  Add to that the honeymoon that follows all relationships with our heroes when they win the WS,  and it's no surprise that most Sox fans began this season liking JD Drew a lot more than they did in, say, August 2007.

Last nite Drew contributed a HUGE clutch hit, a gapper to the wall in left field against Chicago,  and we all remember his outstanding June when Papi was out.  I think it would be fair to say that JD Drew has been crucial to the Sox success this season, and that his seemingly casual approach to the game is nothing more than the way he conducts himself...it's just "JD being JD" if you will.   So sorry about the disrespect last season JD...keep running hard to first base and I'll never bash you again.

Please join me and the boys during the WEEI-NESN Jimmy Fund Radio/Telethon this Thursday and Friday...with your help we can reach the goal of 4 million dollars this year.  Thanks.

MIkey

Nice piece here Mikey !!! Yes,where would the Red Sox be if not for the stellar job put forth by J.D.Drew in Big Papi's absence this year...one can only speculate on the ugly possibilities.Yet all the name-callers[Nancy was one of many he was called]were the first ones on his bandwagon kissing his arse when he put up said results this year.People tend to forget that yes,the players make HUGH amounts of $$$,but they are still human beings and they are affected by the ins-and-outs of everyday life just like you and I.Thanks for your honest post on J.D & I'll continue to listen to your show, which I thoroughly enjoy.GO RED SOX!!! ...View More

I agree. Last year I hated him until the playoffs and this year he really proved me wrong.

Nice piece Mikey! Hope he can keep hitting and stay off of the DL. He's fitting in nicely and has been a great soldier this year.

Great post. JD has been clutch all year and it is great to see him do well. We would be out of this thing if it wasn't for him!!!!

I also will backtrack to my original blog posted here,, JD Drew has been a vital piece in the quest for another World Series. J.D. Drew bashers September 6, 2007 So, I will come out and say that Theo made a major mistake in signing J.D. Drew to that long term contract, thus handcuffing the Sox with the ability to spend in the future. Will Theo admit his mistake and dump J.D. just as they did with my other whipping boy Edgar Renteria? I certainly hope so. For conversation sake let's look at the numbers for both Trot Nixon and J.D. Drew. Nixon 93 games, 296 AB, 30 R, 76 H, 17 2b, 0 3b, 3 HR, 31 RBI, .346 OBP, .257 average. J.D. Drew 121 games, 402 AB, 69 R, 102 H, 24 2b, 3 3b, 7 HR, 49 RBI, .354 OPB. Now, it looks as if J.D. has the numbers over Trot. What would you do as the Sox G.M. ? ...View More

Great stuff! Having been a Drew fan since his days at FSU...he's admitted that he's not a baseball fan, and is also a very private (shy) person, so I think that's part of his JD being JD attitude. But as long as he keeps hitting, I'm fine with it.

After the playoffs last year, I had some "I was saying Drewwwwwwww" t-shirts made up for a couple friends of mine. A play on The Simpsons "were you saying boo or Boo-urns?" bit, in response to the negative reaction he got early on. Now whenever he does something good, a few of my friends txt me "I was saying Drewwwwwwwwwww"...

I enjoyed your thoughts on this. I wasn't a big fan of his last year, but I am now for the same reasons you are.
